After reading Mo Gawdat’s book, Scary Smart, I knew right away this conversation was a must. As I think about AI’s capabilities – the good, the bad and possibly terrifying, I realize how serious this moment is in history for humanity.

Mo Gawdat is the former chief business officer for Google X and has built a monumental career in the tech industry working with the biggest names to reshape and reimagine the world as we know it. From IBM to Microsoft, Mo has lived at the cutting edge of technology and has taken a strong stance that AI is a bigger threat to humanity than global warming.

The AI dilemma is reshaping our future whether you’re in favor of it or not. The question is, are we even close to being prepared for humanity’s collision with artificial intelligence?

Strap in for the ride, we’re diving headfirst into this conversation and uncovering the alarming truth about how vulnerable we actually are and what that means for the next decade ahead.

QUOTES:

“It really is about a point of no return. Where if we cross that point of no return we have very little chance to bring the genie back into the bottle.”

“There is no shutting down AI, there is no reversing it, there is no stopping development of it.”

“We’ve never created a nuclear weapon that can create nuclear weapons.”

“The growth on the next chip in your phone is going to be a million times more than the computer that put people on the moon.”

“When we ask computers to communicate, at first they communicate like we tell them, but if they're intelligent enough, they'll start to say, ‘that's too slow.’”

“One of our better scenarios, believe it or not, is that AI ignores us altogether.”

“Technology today can influence one human at a time.”

WARNING: I will never ask for your contact info in the comments section, that is someone impersonating me!
  • The Russian guy who didn't fire the missiles and saved the world was reprimanded for failing to do his job. He was the only one who worked in the building that had a civilian education. The guy said all the rest were career solders who would always follow orders, he made an educated decision it was a malfunction. He believes if any of the other five guys were there that night, it would have been WW3.
  • “It’s not about better, it’s about profit.” Exactly. Pretty much how I view all 21st century technological advancements.

People often use the Y2K bug as an example of over reacting to a threat, not realizing the huge amount of effort people put in to make sure nothing bad happened. It is infuriating to succeed in stopping a huge disaster only to have people treat the your efforts as a joke.

The whole idea transmitted around 2:14:00 is so strong and important that hearing people not agreeing or at least open to accept as potential true makes me believe that part of the humans are looking forward to become robots and their humanity is already gone. Really loved that portion of the discussion, really think the negative bias will not only play an important role on AI in the short term but it is already impacting humanity right now. Great discussion, congrats all involved!

I firmly believe that To save our planet and our species humanity doesnt need more and more (artificial) intelligence, but a fundamental return to Wisdom.
  • What Mo said about Tom - "Your asset is that you're an intelligent person who understands the concept deeply and asks the right questions" - is literally the perfect description of Tom in his podcasts.
  • @AI_Genius7
He is right it is a perfect storm of innovation and lack of morality. This is a scary time.
  • @jacobmalof
I immediately gravitated towards saying please and thank you when conversing with AI. The Golden Rule might have never had more consequential importance and relevance than this now.
  • The thing is... Even today many people don't wanna connect to others in a deep way. I don't value superficial connections or even conversations. So, ironically, as long as we use technology for communication i think we will stray further and further from one another.
  • @DM100
“We need intervention.” Yes, but we need wise humans to intervene, not government officials. They are the dangerous ones.
  • @roseproctor3177
I'm really, really scared. I puked the other night because I am so anxious about the future. This is terrifying on a level I have never experienced.
  • @krystamarie6283
Wow. My head has been in the sand. This information absolutely blows my mind. I mean I’ve heard of these topics, but am usually too high anxiety to even want to educate myself on these kinds of things. I’m educating myself about what is going on in the world and our future for my children. What a fascinating yet terrifying life is to come… I’m not sure how I feel. I’m trying to stay optimistic instead of feeling “doom and gloom” about everything. I am more worried about my children after I am gone, and future grandchildren, than I am about myself. I can’t stop watching these videos now.
  • This is probably the most worthwhile and remarkable conversation of mind blowing intelligence that I've had the privilege of listening to in quiet some time .
  • @timyeh77
Mo...is the person I'm listening to this month. Wish I knew some of his works/books before!! Very wise and humble gentleman!
  • This was a beautiful podcast bringing out the visible character of both of these thriving developing humans. It will be a continued listening favorite to both inspire and calm my soul! bravo and thank you deeply.
  • @roryblake3232
Tom, thank you for always asking your guests to explain/expand on concepts for the lay person.
  • @IELTS_UK
Mo is the intelligence we most need right now
  • Out of everything being said... The idea of AI having/developing "emotions" is the most unnerving.. Fear brings out the worst in humanity, the reason why this conversation is happening in the first place.. Thank you for sharing
  • People like this man make the world so much better Because this man is straight up and tells you the truth about potential consequences about AI. Thank you For your contributions and insight Mo.
