story time: when i was in college i became good friends with my english professor. we bonded over a lot, but music was always in discussion. i told him i loved Iron & Wine and he informed me that when he was attending Radford University, Sam actually stood in as teacher one day for his cinematography class. one day i went with him to his house so we could pick up this mobile coffee-cart he had built for a coffee shop that was opening that week. before we loaded it into his truck he told me to open the drawer, and inside was Iron & Wine's "Our Endless Numbered Days" on vinyl, which he was giving me as a gift from his personal collection. a couple of years after i graduated he passed away, and to this day, anytime i listen to Sam sing, i think of my old mentor and pal. this performance made me emotional, yet calm. life is about feeling...and remembering. thank you for this <3

Imagine you are just hiking through Yosemite on a nice sunny day and walk into a clearing and see these two dudes just jamming out.

Dude! Nobody warned me that it would be Iron and Wine AND ANDREW BIRD! Why is his name not in the title?! This is amazing. Two of the absolute best artists out there. Nice to hear Upwards Over The Mountain again. and to see Sam and Andrew do something together absolutely makes my day.
  • @NBAyyy
I have watched this video literally countless times.
  • @Boonie22
This is the best “take away show” I think they’ve made in over 5 years at least in my humble opinion.
  • @yrantiquebrand
andrew bird and iron & wine in the same video holy shit this is unreal
  • @192ironbru
iron and wine plus Andrew bird.............. sick. Cheers for that nice surprise
  • @Bluegrass_Bacon
Who needs a pollinator plot when you got Iron & Wine serenading the birds and the bees....
  • Maybe I'm missing it but I see no mention of the name of the fiddle player. That is Andrew Bird and he's a genius in own right.

a whistle off in a song that makes a grown man weep...never thought I'd type those words...I'm not crying, you are!
  • @Jaquableu
My son came to my daughter after he crossed.. He told her this was his song to me. Sons are like birds flying upwards over the mountain. My son's name is Robin. And yes my Robin bird is flying always over the mountains. He is with me all the time. He was 33. I see 33 all the time. Thank you Mr. Bird too! The sounds were awesome.
  • Lyrics: Mother don't worry, I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed Mother don't worry, I've got some money I saved for the weekend Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me? Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body? So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds, flying upward over the mountain Mother I made it up from the bruise on the floor of this prison Mother I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to Mother forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain Mother don't worry, I've got a coat and some friends on the corner Mother don't worry, she's got a garden we're planting together Mother remember the night that the dog got her pups in the pantry? Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws, And you cried 'til the morning So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain

This gave me the same shivers down my spine as when I heard 9 crimes of Damien Rice for the first time.

You've gotta love Sam Beam. He wrote, recorded, and produced his debut; The Creek Drank the Cradle entirely by himself. Shipped it off to Sub-Pop records and got signed on just like that. The true definition of a self made musician. I've loved, been moved, and been in silent awe of his music since those humble beginnings.
  • @lufmesquita
When Sam came to Brazil a few years back, he started playing tree by the river, the crowd started singing along immediately, he got genuinely flustered by the reception he was getting and started over the song, his reaction was so authentic and humble I loved him way more than I already did
  • I've always loved Upward Over the Mountain, and this is the best version together with Andrew Bird. I think of my 2 year old son when I listen to this song. Hes such a momma's boy, but I know he'll reach that age where he'll do it all by himself and I will let him be a man and he'll be okay.
  • My youngest son introduced me to Iron & Wine two decades ago. We are still loving his music. Sam Beam is the closest thing to the genius of Joni Mitchell that I've ever heard. His way of weaving poetry and music is akin to hers. Beautiful and moving. And Andrew Bird is a major plus!

Imagine hiking through Yosemite, feeling the breath of planet earth, when you hear this music carried on the warm breeze.
