mclaren has the fastesr car, 2 superstar drivers, and benny hill for a strategist

So Andrea Stella did explain after the race why they pitted Norris first and so early to cover Hamilton. Apparently, they didn't want to risk having an issue at the pit stop and potentially losing time and track position. And honestly, that explains some of their strategy issues as there has been a bit of a pattern that they don't pit when the margins are small, i.e. when they only have 1 or 2 laps to pit to come out in front of someone, they usually stay out and extend. Or yesterday where they seem way too jumpy with the gaps that they have and by doing so, traded a potential problem at the pits with a guaranteed one with the undercut on Oscar. It seems their safety margins are way too big, especially compared to the other top teams. Maybe it's a lack of confidence or just general midfield mentality but it's happened a number of times now. I really hope they have a look at that.
  • "THE WAY TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP IS NOT BY YOURSELF IT'S WITH THE TEAM , YOU NEED US AND YOU GONNA NEED OSCAR" those words knocked into Lando soul
  • who else was just looking at Yuki - Stroll graph. insane tire management
  • @45auto
McLaren couldn't have handled that much worse. They should have boxed Oscar first or owned the undercut as a way to get Lando the points. They would have looked better even if they'd boxed Oscar first and not allowed Lando to fight for the win.

Leaving Piastri out two more laps complicated the situation, because the gap was then sizeabke instead of 1,5 seconds. Then Piastri was probably not giving it all because he expected lando to swap positions while Lando was giving it all to show that he was faster and to create an uneasy gap for a swap. Piastri was quicker in the first part of the race even with tyre wear, so no reason to assume that he would not be able to match Lando in the last stint with the same but newer tyres.

Another great race analysis from Jolyon Palmer, imo. I liked him answering the questions also. ☮

Wasn't Häkkinen's first win a bit like this? They called him to the pits by accident, then asked Coulthard to let him through. Of course Coulthard didn't make a drama out of it.

It's almost like McLaren were initially favouring Norris for the championship, but then remembered that paying Oscar back for Silverstone(not double-stacking) was more important midway through the race as opposed to 'shafting' Oscar twice in a row.

Piastri was so quiet on the radio after his win.. that was the most awkward GP win I've ever seen.
  • @Blue-ub8ld
I think lando would’ve ignored the team order after the third radio but by the fifth radio it was just purely humiliating the pressure they put on him was crazy they could’ve prevented all that lecturing by using clearer language and not “at your own convenience” lando is right they built his hopes up. Can’t help but feel a little for Oscar too
  • @rfldss89
didn't oscar lack the pace in the last stint because he was managing his tires as they'd both been ordered by mclaren? That's why i think mclaren realy bungled the 1-2. Even with lando pitting first, they could have ordered him to let oscar through WHILE ALSO allowing him to fight for first position as long as they don't crash. We've seen rivarlies between teammates go well, even this season, and actually helping them push one another towards greatness. Russell and hamilton had a bit of a friendly tussle in spain this year which worked out fine for the both of them.
  • @Aleykira
Mclaren just forgot that they have a real chance at not only the Constructor's, but at the Driver's as well.
  • @evidicus
I was angry on Lando and Oscar’s behalf. Management made a huge mistake, and then rather than own it, they used guilt and coercion to make a front line employee clean up their mess. Whoever made that terrible call and put the drivers in that position needs to be held accountable.
  • Cmon Jolyon, you just can't use the word gifted. If he was behind the entire race and was let past, that would be gifted. They went against usual protocol to cover the undercut from Hamilton (which they didnt even need to do) and thats the only reason why Oscar ended up behind. If Lando won, he would have been gifted the win by the team. It's that simple.

We keep forgetting that Norris needed the help of the team in order to be competitive during the race. This is why they felt it was necessary to pit Lando in order to cement their one/two. Respecting the bottomless capabilities of the man in the challenging car. Something Max should definitely have done. I digress. With Lando's struggles throughout the race, his deg was not a guarantee for the remainder of the race. I honestly do not understand what the issue is here. Now, if the team did not brief Lando on what the gameplan was (because I forgot. I don't have the ability, nor do I want to go back and confirm), then I can understand. I still think that Lando did the right thing and gave the position back. He could then take it up with the team afterward. We need to let this go.
