RAY POLLARD - THE DRIFTER (UNITED ARTISTS)

"The epitome of big-beat" Cal Sutton
"love, heartbreak and passion, everything that is required in a Northern Soul record" Poplie
"I remember back in the early 80's when I first heard this monumental piece of soul, that it sounded like the slowest record known to man, and I found it impossible to dance to, not anymore." Raresoulie
"For me 'The Drifter' just encapsulates the full on, heart wrenching and emotion driven passion of soul music, I still love to hear this 45', the moment when Pollard just purrs as the lyrics effortlessly flow from those incredible vocal chords, it still has, and always will have, the ability to electrify every sinew and nerve ending in my poor wretched and self abused body." Brett F.
"I have always been a sucker for the big beat ballad type of sound or a song laden with orchestration and Ray Pollard recorded 2 of my favourites with the "The Drifter" - a desert island disc supreme and I would tuck his "It's A Sad Thing" in there as well.

We have to be thankful that Ray and many others have crossed the Atlantic in the last 20 years to perform and in most cases their performances were captured for posterity for us to saviour."

How in the world was this not a hit in the USA when it first came out? United Artists must not have given it the promotion that it deserved... or maybe it was just a twist of fate. Nevertheless, it's one of the best soul songs I have ever heard, and I'm glad the Northern Soul scene recognizes it as a classic.
