The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that presidents have immunity for official actions in office, giving former President Donald Trump some protections from criminal prosecution and likely postponing his election interference trial until after the November election. Former federal prosecutor Scott Fredericksen, CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford, CBS News chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes, CBS News legal contributor Jessica Levinson, CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa, and attorney and CBS News campaign reporter Katrina Kaufman have analysis of the decision.

  • Impeachment requires an ethical Congress with a backbone not individual Congressional members concerned with self interest.

They have created the never ending law case. Warcrimes and such were always in immunity, but inland crimes and excluding all evidence from official conduct has decended into authocracy. I dont understand this at all...

  • The supreme court took six months to make this decision. It took them two weeks to make the Colorado decision so donā€™t tell me they havenā€™t been dragging their feet.

Vote the bunch out...and term limits for Supreme Court justices
  • Got to protect your own. Corrupt is corrupt. Shouldn't be a surprise it went down this way.
  • Hamilton, in Federalist No. 69, compares the powers of the president to those of a monarch, stating that the president's powers are limited by the Constitution and that he can be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. This concept of impeachment as a check on presidential power is a key theme throughout The Federalist Papers. Madison, in Federalist No. 51, emphasizes the importance of separation of powers and checks and balances in preventing tyranny. He argues that the president should be accountable to the people and subject to impeachment if he abuses his power.

  • How did we get here for goodness sake! It's like America has taken 10 steps backwards!
  • Would this apply to the current president? Could he take out his political opponent and not be held accountable personally?

Two points. The dissent written by Sonia Sotomayor and joined by Kagan and Jackson was hysterical and irresponsible. The King of England during the American Revolution was George III who was removed for a time because he was deemed mad. See the movie The Madness of King George. CBS needs better experts.

Justblike roe v wade, this will energize the Left like never before.
  • per this ruling, it is now legal for a President to stay in power as long as they like by simply declaring an official "state of emergency" and this will stay in effect until the House can impeach and remove them from power (unlikely to happen if the same party holds political majority). Now add in "Project 2025" which removes most if not all of the opposition by the justice department and other "non-elected" officials not replaced by political change and instead replacing them with political loyalists.
  • Justice Sotomayor's eloquent dissent joins Justice Harlan's thunderous long ago dissent in Plessy v Fergurson-Someday ,hopefully soon, her position will be the majority position of the Court.

Jack Smith is not legal appointed. Period........
