WTF Happened to VAL KILMER?

In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.

In this episode we look at the career of the Iceman himself, Val Kilmer! Kilmer broke onto the scene with the comedy flicks TOP SECRET! (see our Best Movie You Never Saw of that HERE) and REAL GENIUS before taking flight with Tony Scott's TOP GUN. From there, Kilmer took up the sword as Madmartigan in WILLOW before landing a stream of great roles throughout the 90s, including THE DOORS, THUNDERHEART, TOMBSTONE, BATMAN FOREVER, HEAT, THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS and THE SAINT. While he never had another era as strong as that, Kilmer dipped in and out with some really solid work, including the criminally underrated THE SALTON SEA, WONDERLAND, SPARTAN and of course, KISS KISS, BANG BANG. From there, things got a little hazy for Kilmer and his health took a turn for the worse. He popped up here and there, working with TOP GUN's Tony Scott again in DEJA VU, started playing Mark Twain on stage, did some voice-over work, some TV appearances and even made a lesser-known flick with Francis Ford Coppola called TWIXT. While not everything he's done in his later years is as strong, credit is due to Kilmer for remaining a consumate professional in his craft and fighting through his own health scares to continue doing what he loves, even getting a return to the franchise that started it all for him, TOP GUN: MAVERICK. Here's to you, Val Kilmer...you can be our wingman anytime!

  • I met this man at San Diego Comic Con in 1998 and he was so humble and polite. He stayed for several hours signing autographs and chatting. Stand up guy! I hope and pray that he beats cancer! "I'm your Huckleberry"
  • His performance in tombstone was unforgettable. I’m sure I’ve watched it a dozen or so times and he made the movie great in my opinion. Prayers for his recovery.

The fact that he kept his illness on the downlow for so long says a lot about the kind of person he actually is, private and internally oriented. Godspeed, icon.
  • @bigblue6917
When one actor asked 'What is my motivation,' the director replied 'You're getting paid a lot of money.' That always worked for me.
  • Last year I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Val Kilmer at a convention. I was wearing a Top Gun T-shirt with a Duck-Duck-Goose joke. He smiled and gave me a sweet hug. I still love him. ❤❤❤❤

Val kilmer didn't want the snakes to know he had cancer. He didn't want sympathy. He wanted to deal with it himself. Good luck to him in the future and hope he's finally happy
  • @tomada36
He was remarkable in 'The Doors'. I read that the other band members were blown away by how well Kilmer played Morrison
  • @heavynumbertaco
Should have won an Oscar for Tombstone. Seriously. He nailed it
  • @podnolej7784
He got cancer and still fighting it . All the best to Val.
  • @crysjoli
The sad thing is he was never fat he was just going through treatment for cancer and that makes you puff up, literally. Man I love Val Kilmer. He's always captivated me, in every incarnation. He still does. It's heartbreaking what the treatment for throat cancer did to his beautiful voice. But the fact that he can still speak and he is still here with us is definitely something to be thankful for.

His work on the Doors was really Oscar worthy! Val is a true artist and in real life he is a loving and fun person. I watched the documentary about him and I'm so sad he lost his voice. The film was able to record his voice prior to the surgery and using high tech have recreated his voice so he can narrate his own documentary. What a great talent. So underrated.

There's a documentary on Amazon Prime Video called Val, produced by him. He's always been my favorite actor. I learned so much about him. I'm glad I found it. You can tell that he's heartbroken about his cancer and how much his life has changed. He looked so sad...just wanted to give him a hug.
  • @Murrman84
Val not even being nominated for Sup Actor for "Tombstone" will forever remain one of the great mysteries/travesties in cinema. Period.
  • Should have won the Oscar for The Doors movie. The singing is outstanding.
  • @feralbluee
Life happened to Val. just like all of us. people get older. people get sick. he is still a great actor and a great father. lots of us still love him and wish him the best. he always cheered us up and i love all his movies. :} 🌼 🎭 “There’s no normal life, Wyatt. There’s just life.” good writer there and a great delivery!!
  • Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer are the two reasons I love Tombstone!!! Those two played their characters to perfection!! Like many people on here I thought Val was a terrific actor, unfortunately we don't know what goes on behind the scenes and it sucks that he was labeled a Hard Actor to work with. I guess he was meant to be a Great Supporting Actor and not a Great Leading Man. I hope he has recovered from his throat cancer.
  • @sharikrauth6081
My favorite actor ever. Period. I’m not only a fan, but also an Oncology Nurse. The treatment for head and neck cancer is brutal and you have to be a very brave soul to endure it. Val is not only brave, but extremely versatile. He’s a real artist.
  • @zovalentine7305
"Jim Morrison couldn't even play Jim Morrison, but Val did" ⚘✊
  • @gingaddict
Just came here after seeing Top Gun Maverick - his scene with Maverick was so moving, I almost choked up. Val is like the new Christopher Reeve after his accident, despite going through hell, he still has a strong spirit. Like you guys, I wish him nothing but the best. Also I am A BIG FAN OF BATMAN FOREVER - NO REGRETS!
  • Val Kilmer is a genius. His best roles were in Top Gun, The Doors, Real Genius, Tombstone, The Saint and Heat.
