So glad they updated the game to make the mysterious figures not die of starvation if you don’t immediately get them their fish. I remember going back to them on my first play through and finding slumped over figures, like: 😬😬😬

The story is that basically you and your wife are fishermen. You take the old mayor and some others on a fishing trip, and you dredge up the book. The weird Cthulhu thing you see in the bad end follows you back, kills your wife, sinks your boat, and makes everyone go crazy. You study the book and find a way to bring your wife back. You need 5 items from your past (the 5 relics). So that’s what you’re here to do. But the guilt overcomes you and you split your personality in half, into the one you play as, and the collector. In the end, you either bring your wife back (while summoning Cthulhu), or you throw everything back and get eaten by the leviathan, which is the giant fish who is also the ancient protector and arch enemy of the eldritch monster.

I love how in the abyss there's just all these monstrous mutant fish, and and there's the Ceolocanth. Unchanged and vibing

The game hints that the Collector isn't actually someone else from the start of the game. When you first meet him, it claims that he is looking at you from INSIDE your boat as you leave the Fishmonger, but it's your own reflection in the boat window. While talking to him, what looks like a doorframe is just the frame of a mirror. If you go through the bad ending, when the Collector joins you, he doesn't take up space on your boat unlike any other NPC.

Its nice that the elderly characters are always the ones saying story things, seeing as how lovecraftian this game is and how in a load of lovecraft's stories the elderly characters tend to spout exposition
  • The foghorn echo is scary because it's not a natural echo, it's the fog repeating it back at you, hence the name. The Lighthouse Keeper has some interesting things to say if you ask her about the fog (her dialogue changes after every relic brought to Blackstone Isle). On a lighter note, given the relics are being supernaturally inflated in size and complexity by your perception - this is stated with the key's description and shown pretty extensively with the music box's, when giving those two to the collector - I find the imagery really funny of the fisherman just placing it in the middle of the hold and then leaving this giant open space around it, the size of several fish, for these small, pocket-sized items.

I dunno if it quite took me 60 hours to 100%, but I also went heavy into crab pots in each area relatively early, and had the best ones as soon as I started dropping them. Comboing bait and harvest can help with the elusive abberants as well. What I really love is the ending though, and on how many layers it's hinted at. The Collector only ever uses plural nouns, we, us. Whenever you pick someone up and bring them somewhere, they take up space in your hull. Except the Collector.

"Have you ever been chased by fish 6x larger than your boat?" Subnautica players:
  • @TheDarkPeasant
Love how in the first 12 minutes of the video he’s already killed himself with haste like 4 times
  • @Seafowl
I feel like I've been seeing an influx of people 100%ing games involving fishing and water
  • @derfetch
the speed isnt in kmh but in kn as in knots, one kn = 1nm (nautical mile) per hour. one nm is about 1.8km also i really enjoy this kind of videos. love to see more
  • @Regrozeer
This game was made so much better by the dog actually being curled up in storage. melted ma fkn heart
  • @thesuperdk513
The fact that you can sometimes see down into the water makes it so much scarier.

i’m glad to see that they made it so the mysterious figures you give fish to don’t just waste away on a timer you don’t know about lol. i didn’t mind i was just kinda like “woops my bad sorry i forgot about you man” and it was part of the experience, given the main story clearly highlights how you’ve become obsessed and driven mad on your quest to revive your wife so it made sense to me the player would forget about “inconsequential” people needing their help, but if you wanna do absolutely everything in a blind playthrough, it’s pretty much impossible when the figures die cause you didn’t have the fish you needed at the moment you found them
  • 12:41 great video, just a bit frustrating to watch you completely ignore the overheat bar on your haste ability, and then say you died to rocks.
  • The whole story is as follows: Julie’s fisherman fiance renames his boat after her and julie breaks superstition by keeping something with the old name. It’s left ambiguous if this actually did anything bad. Hee husband gets dredging equipment and dredges up the book, acting creepy and obsessive over it. She doesn’t like the book. Eventually, something horrible happens as a result of the book- I don’t remember exactly what, but Julie dies horribly. Your fisherman who’s also Julie’s husband goes insane and starts looking for a way to resurrect her. Many years later, the game starts and you seemingly arrive at the town. Maybe you actually do, maybe you don’t, but the events of the game happen with the character of the collector filling in as a proxy of what you can’t remember, asking you to retrieve things like your proposal ring. The two endings either have you resurrect Julie and drag up Cthulhu by proxy, or throw the book overboard and have a giant fish eat your definitely shouldn’t still be alive body. Presumably as the ocean reclaiming you or something
  • I cannot stop rewatching your new videos. It is such a pleasure to see you try something new other than stardew. I hope whatever you play in brings you joy, cause this is the most important thing. Also I absolutely adore your edit style, it is charming and very cute. Please, keep going! Wish you success, you do deserve it. P.S. Stay hydrated, frens!
