A chilly, mysterious forest known as "the place where time stands still"... is also blessed with one of my favorite pieces of background music of all time!

Eterna Forest is one of the most special places in Sinnoh for me. I grew up in Washington state, and have always been around nature quite a bit, and I've really grown to value the feeling of walking through a forest, not knowing exactly where you're going, and just enjoying the beauty of nature. For me, Eterna Forest's theme encapsulates that feeling so perfectly - it's serene, mystical, and so wonderfully melodic... I love this music so much. This music also plays in Snowpoint Temple, the Lost Tower and the Solaceon Ruins, also very mystical locations!

I have honestly been so scared to remake this video! When I released the original Eterna Forest cover back in 2016, I had no clue it would grow to define me in so many ways. It's my most popular Sinnoh cover by far, and for the longest time, it was the video that I would show people when they asked what kind of music I made, and what my YouTube channel was all about. The idea of trying to one-up that previous creation in a redone version for the Year of Sinnoh honestly made me so nervous, but I knew it had to be done. I knew I could keep the spirit of the original arrangement intact and make it just a bit better with my current skillset, and I am so happy to say that I think I've succeeded! Also, the date of this video getting uploaded (August 29th 2020) is my 22nd birthday! I wanted to celebrate how far I've come both in terms of my musical skill and also being alive in general by recreating this arrangement in the best way I possibly could.

The strings, piano and harp were all recorded at a session last December pre-COVID times. We recorded 6 tunes, and this is the 5th tune from that session that I've released. I've been sitting on the footage and audio far longer than I would have liked, but I think that releasing it now is appropriate! :) I opted to exchange the tenor saxophone solo at the beginning of this arrangement before the drop for a clarinet solo, which worked SO well. I wanted a sound that was a bit more simple, transparent, and had more high range, which is exactly what the clarinet brought to the table.

One of my gripes with the original arrangement of this that I did was that I actually got some of the chords completely wrong! Underneath the melody starting at 0:43, my original harmonization was Ami | Bmi | C | Dmi when it's actually supposed to be Ami | Bmi | Emi | Dmi. It's such a subtle shift, but gives that melody a whole new flavor! I also never bothered to transcribe a lot of the detailed background lines that give the original soundtrack version so much magical flavor, so I made sure to include those (harp, strings, and mandolin at 0:53, 1:09 and 2:27.) The only section I really changed from the 2016 arrangement was the addition of a disco strings buildup at 4:10. It's a little bit out of place on first listen, but there's a good reason why it's there! I've honestly come to associate a lot of my personality and who I am as a person with this piece of music... and this arrangement captures several sides of me, including being quiet around new people (0:00), very over the top energetic when I get excited (1:30), and a more introspective side at times (3:00). I wanted one more section to capture my general goofiness and sometimes out of place silliness, since that's something about myself I've more actively embraced over the past few years (4:10). Sounds personal and a bit cheesy I know, but that's how I am with music! I hope this piece of music connects with you even just a fraction of how strongly it connected with me :)

Always surreal to hear updated versions of your covers, cause I've heard the original covers of yours probably close to 100 times. (literally) It's like unlocking a different version of a track in a video game. And I can honestly say this one is better, and perfects a lot of parts that the original cover had.

Eterna Forest already hit different. Then this absolute CHAD had to come in here and have it hit different differnt. Then he said, "I'm gone make it hit different different different" with ANOTHER jazz remix. lawd.
  • I’m actually SO GLAD that you kept the Route 209 and Pokemon Main Theme references in there! They were perfect the first time and were perfect this time as well!
  • This arrangement is astounding; I think we all can appreciate that. But I’d just like to point out that this seems to be one of your best-edited videos yet. The crop layouts are all super fun and vibrant (0:18 and 4:10 are examples that really stand out)...we see a tasteful return of your classic “snow” effect, paying homage to the original cover of this that served as a first impression for many viewers (myself included)...the camera-work on individual shots of the orchestra is so expressive and dynamic....it’s clear that this project has so many unseen layers of production involved in the filming and editing aspect alone, not to mention the time arranging and practice and coordinating with all those orchestra players! This looks and feels like one of your most professional music videos yet, which is by itself something to be proud of! You’re adding an air of professionalism and respect for the unsung greatness of VGM, which is actively fulfilling, if I remember correctly, one of the foremost goals of this channel.

I was actually going to comment about this being like a birthday present to me (my 18th was yesterday- the first away from family), but your birthday is TODAY so HAPPY BIRTHDAY and I hope today treats you especially well!! -signed by an avid listener who loves watching your content and progression as a musician

WHAT THE i literally just discovered your original remix earlier this week and have been listening to it everyday! I've been listening to it during my walks in the park and it's been divine. Can't wait!!!
  • This video is tremendously important to me, and I am so excited to share it with you! My original Eterna Forest video is by far my most popular Sinnoh cover, and it's also a very personal song to me! Check out the original arrangement if you haven't, and I invite you to compare it to this one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRGs8UovlTE I've wanted to redo this song for quite some time, but have always been so nervous to do it because I love the original so much. This video is getting uploaded on August 29th, which is my birthday (it's a good year when birthday aligns with a Saturday upload day haha), and I'm treating this day as a special occasion to finally release this new updated recording. Thanks everyone so much for listening over the years, and long live this version of Eterna Forest :)
  • @g0nnaflynow
Seriously, when is Nintendo going to contact you to do official music for their games? This arrangement has so much depth and soul, and it would blow my mind if I heard a song with so much care put into it in a game. Amazing job as always Carlos!!!

3 years later and I'm still coming back regularly. This is easily one of the most beautiful and nostalgic compositions i have ever listened to ❤
