Happy Black History Month! In honor of Black History Month this year, I decided to dig in my crates, so to speak, and pulled this little gem I wrote back in August of 2019 💎 (before the pandemic 😷….sigh)
Anyhow it was courtesy of a writing prompt that was given at a writer’s workshop I attended at The World Stage in Leimert Park (The Anansi writer’s workshop). It’s my meager attempt at drawing a correlation between sharks and African-Americans. Although obviously and vastly different in many ways, African-Americans tend to face the same struggles as sharks do. We attempt to fight stereotypes (our tendency to be viewed as violent and intimidating etc), and fear for our safety and protection.
I’ll do a full breakdown of this poem and the meaning behind it if you, my audience, request it but, suffice it to say, Sharks and African-Americans face similar problems in certain respects.
