I've been keto for three years. But I was abusing stevia. I was taking huge amounts of the white powdered extract in my coffee and smoothies which I drank multiple mugs every day. After a year of keto, I began to experience peripheral neuropathy (toe tips and fingertips). It was progressively worsening, and I began to feel shooting pains from my toes up through my legs. My doctor was useless and after determining I did not have diabetes or any other condition, he wanted to prescribe some medication to relieve symptoms. I didn't want painkillers so I made systematic efforts to try and understand my condition. It took me quite a long time, using trial and error, to figure out what was going on. By process of elimination, I determined it was the stevia causing the problem. After completely eliminating stevia from my diet, I noticed a lessening of pain within 2 or 3 days. So I decided to stay off it for a longer period. Within another week I was feeling significantly better. And after 2 months all my neuropathy symptoms completely resolved. It's now been 8 months and I am still symptom-free. Had I used recommended quantities, I'm sure stevia would not have bothered me. But I hope someone does some study about over-use and whether there is some caution to the peripheral nervous system. If so, the public should be more strongly warned.

Worst to Not So Bad Sweeteners(by category and each category is numbered from best to worst 1 being the best option of that category) Artificial sweeteners(non-nutritive) like: 1. Aspartame 2. Saccharine 3. Sucralose 4. Acesulfame K Bad Natural Sweeteners: 1. White Sugar 2. Agave Syrup 3. HFCS Kind of bad/Semi- Healthy (natural): 1. Coconut Sugar 2. Honey 3. Maple Syrup 3. Date Sugar 5. Allulose (natural rare sugar) Sugar Alcohols: 1. Erythritol 2. Mannitol 3. Sorbitol 4. Xylitol 5. Maltitol Natural Sweeteners that aren’t as bad: 1. Monk fruit 2. Stevia 3. Chicory Root What Did He Do? - Artificial Diet Soda (Never) - Sugar hardly ever but when he does he eats chocolate 85% - Stevia, Monk Fruit, Chicory Root sometimes - Artificial Sweeteners in small amounts (Erythritol, Xylitol)

I stopped using stevia to replace sugar in my coffee. I experienced worsening body/ muscle aches and joint pains. I felt better after I stopped it. I avoid anything sweet. I have to live with it.
  • @Brutish1
One thing I wish you had addressed is maltodextrin. While not sold as a sweetener it is used as a bulking agent for many sweeteners. Especially the super sweet ones like stevia and monk fruit. The problem with it is that even though it is not a sugar (it is a partially digested starch) it can have twice the effect as table sugar on insulin response. This is of consequence to those of us that are diabetic. Here you are thinking you are making a better choice and the sweetener is stealth mode more damaging than sugar from a filler ingredient.

Why is this not taught in schools? Health should be one of the main core subjects! This information is Gold!

I learned a long time ago that my body hates artificial sweeteners & removes them from my body as quickly as possible. Instant diarreha. No one believes me. So glad to hear someone else say it.
  • @makreviews2146
When buying stevia and monk fruit please check the ingredients because some of these companies are deceptive. The label says stevia or monk fruit but the first ingredient will sometimes be erythritol. That happened to me and I got gas and bloating. Be careful and read the ingredients.
  • I've had people challenge my admiration of you because you are not a 'traditional' Dr. Frankly, you know more about the human body and the science than any 'Dr' I have seen, and you definitely are more accessible than research papers for the lay person. Bravo and thank you!

  • I first realised how dangerous artificial sweeteners were when they started triggering seizures in me. Refused to touch them ever since.

Been on clean keto diet and 18/6 intermittent fasting for 96 days to reverse my fatty liver. I’m 55 years old and so far I’ve lost 26 lbs and my blood glucose is down from 177 to 105 at 1.5 hr after dinner . I no longer have acid reflux which I suffered daily if I didn’t live on Prilosec. I use the stevia only to sweeten my coffee 😁 Thanks Dr EcBerg for all you are doing! 🤩🇺🇸
  • My husband is type 2 diabetic. He started consuming foods with artificial sugars and after changing our bedsheets due to apparent ‘bugs’, I discovered his itchiness was due to his artificial sugar intake. I refused to buy foods containing artificial sweeteners and our ‘bed bugs’ disappeared.
  • @ThyGirlnextdoor
Pro tip, ok just a tip. If you want powdered monkfruit or erythritol for baking or to sweeten whipped cream, don't buy the expensive powdered form. You can put your granulated sweetener in a coffee bean grinder, majic bullet, or blender and make it into powder. Great video Dr. Ekberg, thank you!
