Mudlarking the River Thames - Finding the Treasures left behind by people long ago (May 2021)

Published 2021-05-09
Forgotten people from long ago left evidence of their existence in the dark waters of the River Thames. At low tide some of it washes up for us to find when we are out mudlarking. Join me down on the Thames foreshore as I search for lost, forgotten and discarded objects and then let your imagination run wild as you imagine who once owned it, smoked it, lost it and what were their lives like!? When we find lost objects on the Thames foreshore, it is really like touching history and these objects are a link to the past. Whilst researching the items that we find, we learn things that we didn't even know that we needed to learn! In today's video I find a special pipe bowl that conjured up images of pirates, but the reality of who smoked it is very different! Maybe you can help me to identify the coin I found too!

If you are tempted to try mudlarking on the River Thames then you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find all the details here:-

The following organisations are really helpful when it comes to identifying clay pipes-

I gasped at the skull and cross bones pipe because I knew Nicola was going to love it!
  • That river. In that city. YOUR city! Ancient place, inhabited since time immemorial, has begrudgingly accepted the refuse of countless generations. Thanks to you, that river gives back, in the form of tiny wonders. Treasures! And, you share them with all of us. Thank you!

Imagine finding chain mail from the 15th century and you don’t even name that your “find of the day.”

Ahh, the old fizzy bottle stopper in the sun shot. It never gets old.

I could sit and watch Nicola all day. So informative and such a pleasant voice it's a pleasure to watch her adventures in the mud. It's also wonderful to see a beautiful person getting mud under her fingernails without freaking out. From a mountain top in North Carolina, I love the way she takes me to the Thames for a day out in London because of her I hope to visit there someday. Be well, be safe, Peace.
  • The hover boys found the bottom of a onion bottle today, the teeth(yuck). Today where I am is Mothers day,so with the help of Nic (hijacking her tube for a wee moment) thank you in advance Nicola, here goes, I lost my youngest brother in January and I lost my mom this April, so even though my heart is heavy with sorrow, I wish all mothers everywhere the very best all year round , cause moms are special everyday. Thank you Nicola for a great lark, and happy Mother's day to you as well. Much love from Canada. 🇨🇦🐘🍁🤗
  • Nicola bring us the quality and story of the past that would normally not be a part of our daily lives. Nicola, your love for the past is why we are here.
  • I loved the skull and crossbones pipe! It seems to be a reminder that smoking can kill you! Happy US mother's day 🌹. When ever I see ducklings running after their mother I think she must have said " come along children, we have lots to see and do!". Best wishes and hugs from Oregon 😀
  • The fish teeth are so amazing and creepy. To think that the last thing a shrimp may see is it's impeding doom on throat teeth!😮😯😮🤤. Aww the elusive coin identity is beyond me. Love yesterday's pipes. Sorry so late to watch. Blessings Nic

  • @gaiaocracy
You were missed last week. The footage of the "let it go plates" is quite touching as these times of living with Covid19 do require detachment. Your videos are quite up-lifting, and I thank you!

How amazing is the skull & crossbones pipe, never ceases to amaze me the things you find. You have found quite a lot of pipes over the years and it's amazing that you find ones you haven't yet seen

My favorite pipe whisperer did it again! Not one but two pipes she has not found before! As usual, another Sunday adventure that does not disappoint. Thank you for the history and the wildlife too!
