.. The Flying Dutchman ..

How Dutch Captain VanderDecken dares defy God and is doomed to roam the Seven Seas forever.. Whosoever encounters his ragged vessel is destined to share his fate.. The "Death Coast" of Southern Africa has claimed thousands of ships and countless lives: A ghost ship that makes the Southern Capes forever treacherously tempestuous..? A metaphor for the terrifying gales and hurricanes that roam the icy ocean around the Antarctic..? On the deep bond between a little nation and the seas; how an old seaman's tale turned into a lasting symbol in western history and culture..

Go to the Cape of a Good Hope and yell “I’ve got a jar of dirt” into the sea, that tends to get the Dutchman’s attention.

Most random documentary I've watched in a while.

Legend has it out at sea . . . Late at night while it's quiet and still. You can still hear it off in the distance LEEDLE LEEDLE LEE-DA-LEE

I believe the legend of the Flying Dutchman is true and that it's out there right now. All my adult life, I get an unnatural chill down my spine when I read or hear about it. And I really don't have a interest in the sea other than a passing interest in the Golden Age of Piracy. But when it comes to Flying Dutchmen stories. It's like a cold chill like someone stepping on my grave kind of feel. Who knows. Maybe a past life memory as a seaman.
  • As a US NAVY Destroyer Sailor I have been humbled, awestruck, terrified, and, comforted by the Seas, yes, even I heard of the Dutchman as a true Ghost Ship..
  • When I was a kid in the early 70s there was a 90 something yr old man used to bomb around town in a gigantic 50s cadillac everyone called him the flying dutchman

Spongebob sure has the deepest lore.
  • I've crossed the Atlantic Ocean a couple of times, on a full-rigged Sailing Ship - and it's true that it makes one feel puny and humble when you're out there in the middle of it all, with the stars above you and not another ship in sight, just water as far as you can see.....

the lesson from the Flying Dutchman is that we must never underestimate the sea, never challenge the gods and always have respect for mother nature

Let no joyfull voice be heard! Let no man look up in the sky with hope. And let this day be cursed, by we who ready to wake.. THE KRAKEN!
  • Of all of the stories on the Flying Dutchman that I have watched, this is the most educational. I truly enjoyed this show. Thank you for putting it up.

Im from Cape Town, I have seen this ship while late night fishing off the Cape Of Good Hope, the sails were glowing , at first we assumed it was a late moon rising in the horizon until it started heading in our direction towards a very rocky bay, the image of the ship eventually became so clear, we found it strange that an old ship like this one was going to dock at such a late hour and then as we watched this spectacular happening, the ship seemed to have taken a turn to its right ,a bit more than 90 degrees and then it started to fade and suddenly everything went dark again, and it seemed as if what just happened was just only a dream, freaked out we packed up our fishing tackle and returned to our camp site
