Petchaburi (เพชรบุรี), Thailand - The Tham Rong Community in Petchaburi, central Thailand is home to many palmyra palm trees (also known as sugar palm or toddy palm), which grow in plantations and mainly within the rice paddy fields. It’s an amazing tree, with so many uses, and so important throughout Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia and India. #Thailand #Fruit #palmsugar

In Thailand, “nam dtan,” literally means the water of the palmyra palm, but today that word is used for normal sugar. That’s because traditionally this was the main source of sugar in Thailand - and it still is common - but white table sugar has taken over for convenience and cheap price. But palmyra palm sugar is the real deal, fragrant, mildly sweet, and much less processed and healthy.

Before visiting this palmyra palm tree fruit plantation, I didn’t know all the different uses of this amazing fruit and tree.

Palm fruit cluster
Fresh palm sugar sap
Palmyra mesocarp pulp
Palmyra fruit - seed socket
Germinated seed

Thank you for watching and hope you’re having a fantastic day!

  • I am from Telangana (India) , in our childhood to get the sprout inside the shell , it would take 10 to 15 minutes for each, toddy palm is a magical tree , we drink its sap , wine , and we eat its seeds , fruits, sprout, stem and even fungus growing inside it (we call it thati buzu) , we use its leaves to make ropes , glases for drinking water and as roof of houses and its stem is used to build houses and as firewood
  • Anybody is from Tamilnadu, India watching this video? Give ur thumbs-up... This is the official tree 🌴 of Tamilnadu, and it's highly respected in our Tamil culture 🇮🇳 which is one of the oldest culture in the world!

Palm trees are traditional trees of south India Tamil Nadu . I have palm trees in my farm . We use palm sugar and even palm leaves as plates to serve food. Mark please visit Tamil Nadu in India and help to know our palm trees too 🙏🏻

8:38 โอ้โห ไหว้ต้นไม้ด้วย A sign of true respect, the fruits they farm help them to have a life that they enjoy, and it seems none of that is taken for granted. When you see him pay his respects to the tree like that you really understand his level of gratitude.

Thailand is rich in natural resources. The King has really utilized his power to upgrade farming in the outskirt and remote part of Thailand in his early reign after confronting the communist threat.

Brought back fond memories of growing up in Mumbai. We used get the jelly like fruit which used to be our after school snack. Locally it is called Taad Gole, taad= palm and gole=ball. In South India they would sell it whole with the husk and all and I think they called it nongu. Nongu sherbat is an amazing refreshing drink made from it.

Currently watching. The scenery is so beautiful. It’s nice to see people aren’t typing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc in the comments. It’s pathetic. Enjoy the commentary.
  • love this kind of educational videos, so much new stuff to learn about the gifts mother earth provides us with
  • @reijikusaka
Thank you for the cool video! The seed jelly socket of the fruit is common delicacy here in the northern shore of Java in Indonesia. People usually made beverages with the slices of the jelly combined with palm sugar and coconut cream. But I never know that the husk could be consumed immediately like that. It is kind of unusual here. Really amazing discovery there!
