A Final Chapter For Dad: Leaving a Legacy of Stories | Life Update

Published 2024-04-25
A few weeks ago, I received the surprising news that my dad had suddenly passed away with no warning. After taking a few weeks off from the channel to process and grieve, I wanted to get on today to talk about him, his love of stories, and how he has influenced my reading life.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss, Art. It’s lovely you are able to pay tribute to your Dad in this way. 💛 Star Wars and sci fi and coffee are just so awesome. Storytelling is so important, as you say. Thinking of you and your family at this time, Art.
  • Yes, reading aloud to your children does make a huge difference and it's such a great opportunity to strengthen those relationships. As I listened to you share these memories with your dad and your children, I thought about all of the quotes from movies and books that my boys and I are quoting to each other all the time. They tie us together. -priceless

Beautifully said. I can imagine it's been a difficult few weeks, so thank you for letting us share in this process with you. My grandfather read to me growing up. He also taught me songs and recited poetry. I wish my grandchildren would have had the opportunity to meet him. The kids and I have wonderful connections to him through sayings, quotes, and books.
  • Condolences for the loss of your father. I’m glad I found your channel. You are kind man. May your father’s memory be a blessing

What a heartfelt tribute to your dad. I have some memories of my mother reading to me and my sibs when I was five, but she started with board books in the crib, and even books in the bathtub with all of us. So, just because you don't remember, doesn't mean that it didn't happen. At the very least, it was modeled for you. Both my parents read "for fun." That's a powerful influence right there. Trips to the library and bookstore reinforced the importance of reading. Historian and author Daniel Boorstin said that reading aloud to your children was THE most important way to encourage reading, and not to stop when they learn to read for themselves. Afterall, what are audio books if not being read aloud to? No matter what kind of stress anyone has had, it's a great ritual for ending the day; calm and connected. Taking that time together doesn't just say, "Reading matters." It also says, "YOU matter." There is no replacement for having that time together and it becomes a foundation for so many other things.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know it never helps when people say they understand but I recently lost my mom so I understand your pain. Talk all you want! This is such a nice way to remember him!
  • That's so tough to process with your dad's quick death. I'm so sorry, Art! Praying for you as you process your dad's death and your relationship with him. It's so lovely to hear about your dad's life and how he passed on his loves to you. I love your thoughts too about sharing stories. I so agree with you! My grandparents have all died now, but I love remembering their lives and the stories they told me about their own lives.
  • What a lovely tribute to your dad. It's a real challenge to deal with a sudden death--it feels almost unreal at first and is a "just keep swimming" situation. Hang in there!
