In November last year, a ten-year-old girl was found during a routine traffic roadblock, squashed inside the luggage compartment of a long-distance bus. She had been smuggled from Zimbabwe into South Africa under extreme conditions for several hours. But her case isnโ€™t unusual. In this months-long investigation, Carte Blanche unravels alleged cross-border human trafficking and the shadowy figures known as transporters who are making it all possible. Undocumented foreign nationals are lured to South Africa from numerous African countries โ€“ many of them ending up on the streets of Johannesburg North. Thousands of Malawians are lured into the country on the promise of a new life, some smuggled by long-haul bus companies and funeral parlours, only to be forced into sex work and manual labour. In an even more sinister twist, many of the victims are coerced into taking out funeral policies on themselves once they reach South Africa. Itโ€™s an unusual demand but a guaranteed income as the transporters cash in on vulnerable undocumented foreign nationals.

Iโ€™m always amazing at how Carte Blanche can find these guys but SAPS canโ€™t.

Derek's legacy is in great hands. Keep up the amazing work.
  • My heart dropped when I saw that little girl. The thought that human trafficking is happening in our backyard is disheartening.

As a father of 2 daughters this is sickening... Whoever partake in this illicit business, Your day of reckoning is on the way..
  • @grumpySafa
Wow, South Africa just gets worse and worse.
  • @PatriciaOIsaac
Lord please I am on my knees, have mercy on the children...I am disheartened. This is a reality hard to accept.
  • Truth be told, South Africa never had so many Malawians. With illegal foreigners in South Africa, come different types of crimes that the SAPS cannot manage. We are going to have to change government to fully eradicate these illegal foreigners crimes. We definitely need a strong arm of the law. This is not only from Malawi. The illegal Nigerians in this country working in salons were promised jobs in South Africa.
  • This scares me even more to think that even our own children arent immune to these horrendous crimes.
  • @Leonidas300SP
Imagine how many politicians & elites are even involved in this. Surely it goes much much deeper.
  • Thank you once again Carte Blanche for exposing these criminal elements and fighting crime
  • @njongomato

Bheki Cele is aware of this, the intelligence is aware too and our political leaders are aware. We are on our own.

    - That goes to people hiring domestic workers who are here illegally - Restaurant owners who are benefitting from cheap labour - Home affairs employees who are selling documents to these people - EFF leadership who sees nothing wrong with porous borders, that even their leader said it on record that they should find creative ways to enter South Africa - Helen Suzman organization that is protecting the ZEP beneficiaries that was not supposed to happen in the first place - Not forgetting the border post police All these people have a hand in all crimes, hijackings and murders that are related to illegal immigration

  • What is more concerning is that none of the top 3 political parties are taking a harsh stance on illegal immigration and trafficking. It even took international agencies like the FBI to alert South Africa that we are a playground for human trafficking.
