Abraham's convoluted conscience

Published 2013-04-19
Video documenting the troubling fact that the Bible records the pointless conversation between God and Abraham concerning the fate of Sodom, and omits the conversation that took place after God asked him to kill his son.

The story in which the sun kept shining involved Joshua. But i have often wondered about the story of Jephthah's daughter. i used to agree with the Watchtower's argument that Jephthah didn't actually kill her, but offered her for temple service. However, these days i'm not so sure. Thanks for watching.

I agree, in fact, both Abraham's "test" and the story about Jephthah's daughter have always concerned me. Except Jehovah didn't stop the sacrifice in the case of the girl. And to make matters worse, Jephthah offered a soul IF Jehovah would keep the sun shining so he could fight Jehovah's war. He was so brave and murderous for Jehovah and then in return, he also had to kill his own daughter, his only child, and burn her as an offering.

Abraham trusted that God had the power to bring Isaac back to life. He fully trusted in God. And this is what we should do when we come to things we don't understand. "Trust in the LORD with your whole heart and do not lean upon your own understanding. " Remember Proverbs 3:5?

I went and looked it up and you're right, I kind of intermingled them! Sorry. One bloodbath looks like the other to me, I suppose. It's in Judges chapter 11, and he definitely offers to give the first person who meets him as a burnt offering, I'm not sure how they downplayed that.

God used His angel to represent himself as He did with Moses and Israel. See Exodus 23: 20-23. Compare with Isaiah 63:8-14 where God speaks of this angel as "the angel of my presence." He also called this angel His Holy Spirit which He put among His people.

  • this is hardly a pointless conversation.  It is a promise to us.  God will not Destroy even one righteous person with the wicked.  In this passage we have an assurance that our life in Christ is secure.     As to Isaac - Abraham believed and trusted God.  He already gave him the miracle of a son which should have been impossible and had promised him to be a father of nations through Isaac.  So great is Abrahams faith he trusted God would still keep his word even though is seemed impossible.  Thankfully Abraham passed God's test so we might be deemed worthy of God's sacrifice - his son.
