I began playing "bluegrass techniques" about 57 years ago. I was 12 years old and ""Wildwood Flower" was the very first tune. David is among my favorite acoustic pickers. I am from the Catskills in upstate N.Y. Since retiring I am back up here in these hills that hold so many fond memories.

One of the important things David Grier said (which flew on by), while trying to show us how to start to learn a cross picking patter, was "oh my gosh, I can't do it when I try to think about it". If you want to build speed, you've got to practice long enough to cross the point of thinking about what you're doing. It may take two or three hours of steady practice or it may take twelve hours of practice, but when you stop focusing on 'what' you are doing and 'only on the melody of the tune you are playing', your hands will coordinate with what's going on in your head. If you're thinking of the tune up to speed, your hands will follow suit.
