This VAN Tried To Burn Itself To The Ground *DEAD SHORTED*

Gabe pulled up in his van and I though the brakes were on fire... I coudn't have been more wrong. Turns out his alternator shorted itself internally and we we're moments from watching it turn into a fireball before we ripped the battery cables off. Today we've got to fix his 2012 Volkswagen Routan, and get it back to being the ideal work and people moving machine.

Always great when Gabe visits! He was helpful in the house build too. He's not as far away as when you were in your old shop, you should have him back more often!

I have replaced a few Grand Carvan alternators. I do it by unbolting the AC Compressor without disconnecting the hose and move the compressor back out of the way then replace the alternator through the wheel well. Quick easy to replace alternator without needing to drain coolant or remove the washer fluid container. But head up that AC compressor requires a special socket to unbolt it from the mount. Replacing through wheel well will be a tight fit but doable with compressor unbolted and moved aside out of way.

My uncle owned an auto electric shop before he passed. The only thing more fun than burning alternators and exploding batteries were the big boy starters spitting fire as they turned engines over. Of course, I was the one already-failing alternator he missed before I took a roadtrip to South Carolina, solo, in a 12 year old Grand Am with 200,000-something miles on it.

Been a loooooong time since I have had an alternator tested. That machine is cool. A far cry from the rickety rattle trap of a tester from 40 years ago. lol

It's not so much a failed alternator, as a shorted alternator diode. Here's an analogy: Imagine a sump pump hooked up to your sewer system, and there was a backwater valve that only allows sewage to flow outwards whenever your pump is running. Now imagine the backwater valve getting stuck open. Sewage would be able to gush right into your basement. Note: In reality, this would not happen unless there was a sewage backup in the street, but the analogy is actually more accurate if you imagine, fictitiously, that the sewer was constantly pressurized.
