Correction: at 1:31 I say "C and C flat" and I mean C and C sharp.

I got one of these Nuvo flutes and I played it meanwhile my own Mateki was getting its maintenance for 2 weeks! I was quite suspicious about it at first. I hope I'll be able to compare it to a "normal" student flute of the same price range at some point.

This is a somewhat brief introduction. I'll most likely cover the instrument more in future videos. It is quite interesting really!

I feel this type of comparison is the best! When people play one entire piece on one instrument and then the other I forget what the first sounded like. I really like the way it was done here. The pink flute sounds a bit dull, not crystal clear but not too bad!

As a non flute player, I would imagine that the plastic version is a reasonable flute on which to learn and practice.

honestly as a flute player, I cannot hear the difference without looking at it...

I think it is the best solution for playing flute in the marching band. I wish they made a full silver one so it would fit in for the marching band. This is the best thing because marching band is hard enough with having a wet flute that is slippery it gets when it's wet and being in marching band getting repairs for pads and etc becomes costly and expensive. So I highly recommend this for marching band because to break or lose a 500 or 1000 dollar flute vs a 100 dollar flute is way better.

Good switch and back flute comparison, and interesting to hear the benefits of the plastic flute. I too do hear the softer deeper vibrations on the plastic flute, almost like a wood flute, which makes high notes impossible.

There are 3 important points to think about if you're considering buying a flute for a young beginner: 1. The flute should be light so that the child can keep her embouchure steady over the lip plate. Her airstream will then stay in the same place, not moving away because the child can't hold the flute steadily. 2. The price should be low in case the child gives up after a year or two. Obviously the tone, tuning, keys and pads all have to be of a reasonable standard. 3. Beware of maintenance costs. The design should reduce the need for repair and overhaul to a minimum. Head joints are easily damaged on metal flutes; in contrast, you can drop the Nuvo's head joint on a brick floor and it will bounce back undamaged. Nuvo pads are waterproof, they don't tear or rot and last just about forever.

Wow it really has a nice voice. I expected it to be breathy and dull. These new, decent quality plastic instruments are awesome for beginners and others with a tight budget. Too bad for the high voices though. Great comparison, thank you!

I am enjoying your videos, Heline; please keep them coming

I'd never heard of this before, but it seems pretty cool for the price. Thank you for the review.

i've been saving up to get this, pink is my favorite color. i also saw that they had white ones with pink, blue & green accents. nuvo also has clarinets, & recorders

I only played fire for a short while before I dropped it for a lower woodwind instrument, but it honestly sounds great for it being plastic. It's quite hard for me to tell a difference between at times as well, you truly made the intrusment sound wonderful. I also adored the way you did the playing comparison, it made it clearer to see how it sounded compared to your flute, it was nice :)

nice video review! nice to see the doggies roaming around in the background!
  • I bought the 2.0 version for my first flute. I think it was a good purchase. The lightness is helpful when first starting. The tone is not quite the same but with practice still sounds good. Even after I eventually upgrade it will be useful for it's durability. I go camping a lot and I would not want to bring a 700-2000$ flute camping.
  • Great review. I did not expect so many positives! Might get if for the outdoors and gigs. It is unfortunate that it barely reaches the high G.

If you are a nature lover, hiker, this would be great. Flute is a lovely instrument for the woods. So a lightweight water resistant flute is a good idea.
  • Swan Lake is one of the first solo songs I’ve learned! By the time you played the first bar, I was already singing along. I decided that wasn’t enough, so I searched for the music and started to play loud and proud at 6 i’m the morning. I still have a ways to go, however. This will be my 8th year playing the flute! I am a sophomore in high school. What was once hard for me is very easy and it is pleasing to know how far I have become and how much better I will be in time ❤️

Hello, Heline: Thank you for the review and especially the playing comparison, switching between the plastic Nuvo flute and your very nice Mateki flute. If you ever update this video, it would be helpful to hear you play the high notes on your flute to compare with the failed high notes on the plastic flute. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the plastic flute sounded in the lower registers, at least. Thanks again.
