Touching gallium

At room temperature, gallium is completely solid. However, it has a super low melting point of only about 30C (86F), so in a bowl of hot water, it should completely liquify. As a liquid, it kind of looks like mercury, but it's not nearly as toxic, and it's much safer to hold in my hand. However, it is a lot messier and tends to stick to things, and it leaves an annoying residue.

"Unlike mercury. It's a lot less toxic" Sounds like something I would say right before I get gallium poisoning.

Mercury: "I'm not dirty." Gallium: "I'm not toxic."

There used to be a joke amongst chemists back in the 1800s or 1700s: Someone would melt gallium, mold it into a spoon, and then have a party guest use that spoon with their cup of coffee or tea. When they add sugar or something that needs to be stirred in, they'd use the rigged spoon. Yep you guessed it (maybe): the spoon would melt and be either a mild fright or a good laugh between the two (or both). The Disappearing Spoon trick kinda fazed out once they learned it's not very fun when the person doesn't notice the difference and dies of heavy metal poisoning.

“It’s not nearly AS toxic, and it’s much SAFER to hold in my hand” Note how he didn’t say it was safe, or not toxic. The madlad.

You forgot to tell how to remove that residue 😆

My mum got gallium from my grandad for Christmas and she was estatic, she knew nothing about it other than it was a cool liquid metal but she loved it!
  • Leaving it to roll down like that was very important for the culture!
