When the cypress trees are awash in spring green, you can bet that below their gnarly limbs are crappie conducting their annual spawn.

This week, I used a bait that has been super productive this season -- the Bobby Garland Slab Hunt'R Minnow -- to get hard hits and put fish in the boat.

Check out the video for all the details!

I’m from northern Utah. We have some crappie. Folks who go after them fish like you or use bobbers and worms or fly fish. The gentleman who taught me how to fly fish was a big fan of crappies. When he cooked them he coated the fillets in the dehydrated potatoes that are used in instant mashed potatoes. Potato buds? The Idahoan brand is the best. Plus they have different flavors such as Parmesan or garlic herb. They’re pretty tasty that way. A good crunch too. The scenery with the cypress trees was beautiful.

I’m in NC. Crappie fishing right now too! When the Dogwoods bloom and similar to you, but with a BFS baitcasting set up
  • 1/32-1/64 jig head under slip cork rig would double your catch. Easy for me to say, I don’t have a successful shpw such as your self. Always dig the show. A cork going under never gets old for me. You would stay inthe strike zone much longer and catch more fish. That is the point. Again dig the show as always, but does drive me a lil crazy watching you miss so many fish pulling out of the strike zone continually. Continued success and keep the shows coming! Brian Frederick👍🤙😎

South East Texas, originally from Houma. I fish sacalait in a big creek system. More like a bayou or small river back home. As shallow as 2 ft and as deep as 20 feet in the bends. Super sandy bottom so hard wood trees and brush piles are the only structure. Use both jigs and minnows under a cork. My creek system is large and deep enough that the fish stay there year round. And catch bonus limits of white bass during spring spawn. Sacalait are still up shallow as of last week. Caught two over 2 lbs full of eggs about 1.5’ deep in flooded timber

Lockport Louisiana. Same spawn as you observe of course. I fish them with a small spinner bait low and slow if the water temp is 65 or below. Faster the warmer the water temp. Pink, orange and yellow seems to do the trick.

I grew up fishing south Louisiana: Bay Natchez, Belle River, Lake Verrett; the Atchafalaya Spillway, out of Bayou Sorrell & Pigeon- Lake Murphy, Bee Bayou, Grassy Lake; also fished out of Bayou Black- the weirs along Bayou Copasaw... We also fished Grand Isle and Elmer's Island many years ago... I built my Dream Home in Crane Hill, AL on Lewis Smith Lake, and now adjusting to a completely different style of fishing...! Nothing compares to a tight line with a fish at the smart end of it!

Im in west central Ohio, spawn here can be as early as late march/early april and run through to mid may, can be as late as end of April and run through till early June, all depends on when water temps I enjoy using plastics and occasional hair jigs w bobber, also use the steady retrieve with a underspin with plastics, I have done a little live bait tactics

I’m in the north MS Delta. Thx for mentioning us. The last 20 years, I’ve trolled for the crappie using my pontoon boat. Either by pushing jigs or pulling crank baits. The cranks’ will net you more than crappie (it’s like a box of chocolates). I wait until after the spawn and start the last of May, and run through the fall around November. I’ve also used other methods of cooking them, besides the deep fried. But I’m going to try your method of butter and skillet with the sauce. Tight lines!
  • Hell yea Todd , you the man , I was at the Eddie Pinto‘s about two years ago, pitch dark and I seen you pull in with the fishing net hanging off the center console and the old boat. As you got in a boat in the water I screamed. Is that the marshman !and you had that same laugh you always make. Probably probably thought I was a crazy fool lol

Hello from west Tennessee, thank you for taking the time to share your experience, thoughts, and fun with us on video. I’ve fished for a lot of species of fish, but not crappie. I just had a buddy of mine tell me last week that the crappie here were biting extremely aggressively. I’m guessing that they are on the nest. I have a small local lake that is flooded timber and we have developed a taste for catfish so much that we don’t make tuna casserole anymore, we make catfish casserole and it’s delicious. I’m fortunate enough that the same buddy told me about an old john boat for sale for a screaming deal. It’s a 1961 Dura Craft 36”x14’ that’s tight as a drum with the trailer. Would you believe that it was only $450 with new seats, lights, tires, and a tiny trolling motor. Thanks again and keep catching fun

Montana, depending on the weather, late, late May thru June. Using the same tech your doing, jigs 1/8th to 1/32 with various tails, we fish mostly rocky shore lines, but hey do love downed trees and brush. Of course folks use minnows, but not needed when fish are around.
  • @ricksergent8756
Cloudy southern windy last week of April to 2 week of may in southern Indiana. Fishing the same way you do. Water temps at 62-65 is spawn
  • @SuperRobertheath
A guy here used to make a small spinner bait called a lake boeuf special. It was the size of a beetle spin but with a 3.5 gold willow blade. I can’t find them anymore but they were sac-a-lait killers.
  • Central MS only been crappie fishing for a couple of years. Minnows and slip cork..
  • Sac a lait catch and cook, MMMM. That is a good looking dish, will try it soon. Please comment back if U ever filleted the outside of a bass rib cage. fried is as good as it gets.12" fish or larger is the easiest. great vids watch every single one. thanks, have a blessed day.

Hey there, ...I do quite well fly fishing or Spey casting… fresh and salt… That method of the clear bubble & a fly on a leader has been around long before I was even thought of...I’m 63 now, ... I'm not disrespecting you, ...it's quite an effective setup, to say the least, .. You can also have 2 leaders and 2 flies, the high / low, ...2’ and 4’ leaders. Out West here, .. Folks here use this setup for just about any species even in the surf, ... Some Striper fishermen use a large bubble with enough water and a large Clouser minnow (Bob Closer fly design) w/4ft of 20 lb mono leader, weighted fly to whip it just past the breakers, ... So many large Stripers 30 lbs. Plus have been caught with said setup, ..., I'm a surf caster and fly fisherman... Lures and flies only..! No foolin' around with bait for moi… lol🤣 Tight lines to all you Guys…! 🤙😎👌

i’m pretty much the same area as you I’m over here in Livingston parish and they’re pretty much on cue with the brim and I like to jiggle them drop straight down on them in a brush pile stump holes. with all this rain all our water is like YooHoo water
  • @TUKByV
Fort Lauderdale area. I have no idea about the crappie, to be honest. I don't get to fish much. Crappie catch & cook is on my bucket list, along with quite a few others!
  • Thank you for consistently eating bass…. They are delicious, and too many people are emotionally attached to handling them. Glad to see you still out there.

Seee I’m in north Louisiana around Monroe and fishing for perch the way you’re fishing is by far my favorite but when I switched to BFS my catch ratio tripled bc I was use to bass fishing with regular bait cast reels now I use the same they’re just smaller in size and the rods are designed for bfs fishing so medium light action down to ultralight action you can cast 1/32oz jigs 20yds with this type of equipment so I hope you give it a try it’s the most fun god bless
