Pro tip: During the "concise" section add the clip of Kevin from The Office saying "why say lot word when few word do trick?" 😂

Who is here because they have an essay to write?

This is generally decent advice, I agree with the points about active voice and being concise, but I think the "no repetition" rule comes with some caveats. When students are told to not repeat themselves they tend to reach for a thesaurus to find some obscure synonym of what they are really trying to say. I think there is one rule of academic writing that you do not mention, and that is to pay close attention to verbs. Students like to use verbs like "indicates", "reflects", "notes" to vaguely gesture at an idea without having to precisely state it, or just because they think "indicates" is somehow more academic than "says". I also don't think there is anything inherently wrong with occasionally using "also" to relieve some of the weightiness of a word like "furthermore". More generally, students should be encouraged above all else to be conscious of, and empathic to, the reader. Convey ideas efficiently, don't dress them up, find the most precise language to express what you want to say (and "precise" does not always mean "simple", a difficult concept may require novel uses of language to be expressed fully). Pretend your reader is there with you as you write, and you are trying to convince them of the validity of what you say as best as you can.

Today I was working when a YouTube message arrived on my computer. It was a new video from InteractiveEnglish and I was curious about its content. I was impatient to finish my work to listen to my teacher and take new paths of thought. My expectations have been met and now I am writing, trying to follow the useful advice you gave us. Thank you
  • @reirin7486
I am getting low grades from my exams. But ,I study well. I thought the reason may be about how I am writing the answers. They are probably too messy and each sentence contains too much information. Thank you! I will try these tactics in my upcoming exams.
  • As a English learner, I am excited about avoiding phrasal verbs. That is why most Spanish words are usually similar to complex word than the confusing phrasal verbs.
  • @mychudungco
Yes, thank you for your tips. However, one of the critical factors contributing to your academic writing is the material. Materiality plus the mentioned tips equate to the success of your writing skills.
