The X-Men movies are a lot like the X-Men comics: dense, exciting, and often confusing. But for a while before the MCU was developed, they came to define exactly what a multi-film superhero franchise could be. The ongoing narrative of persecution and perseverance went backward and forward through time, splitting off into new realities, and occasionally flying off into outer space.

It all becomes a little hard to keep track of, so here’s the entire X-Men timeline, explained.

#XMen #MCU #Superhero

X-Men: First Class | 0:00
Trask Industries | 1:45
X-Men Origins: Wolverine | 2:50
X-Men | 4:31
X2: X-Men United | 5:55
X-Men: The Last Stand | 7:18
The Wolverine | 8:45
A new timeline | 10:12
X-Men: Apocalypse | 11:32
X-Men: Dark Phoenix | 12:38
Deadpool & Deadpool 2 | 14:00
The New Mutants | 15:29

What are your favorite X-Men movies?
  • Honestly, it's amazing how inconsistent this timeline was before it all ended

props on Looper’s effort on explaining this very confusing story-timeline

It just breaks my heart knowing that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian Mckellen are getting older. They were perfect for the roles of Professor X and Magneto. It's just a pity that we didn't have the technology and the funds and opportunities that exist today and also the investments in Comicbook movies to be able to do more with these amazing actors and human beings.

One thing that a lot of people didn't catch is that as inconsistent at the timeline is the one consistent thing about it is that sometime in the 2020s the majority of mutants are hunted and killed.
And it all comes back to a quote made in days of Future past (the first time we see the mutants future)
"It's like a river – you can throw a pebble in and create a ripple, but the current always corrects itself. No matter what you do the river just keeps flowing in the same direction."

The scene at the end of Logan floored me. Such a powerful symbolic switch. Whoever thought of that should be proud of themselves. <3

For anyone wondering how Charles Xavier was seemingly ressurected -

In the X-Men: The Last Stand's credit scene, Xavier is greeted by a nurse - Moira McTaggart - who asks him how he's doing. She was briefly mentioned previously in the movie at the school by Xavier himself, when he talks about putting someones conscious into a body with no conscious. So they somehow transferred his 'brain' into a replicate body of him.
  • I recently watched the X-men franchise, this clears up the confusion I had with the timeline.

I hate how these heroes are turned into a huge and confusing moshpit of movies. It makes it so hard to piece everything together. Thanks Looper!

Love this video. This perfectly summed up all the X-Men movies and timelines in a great way 😁

An amazing franchise with perfect cast! Wish we could have an infinite amount of Xmen movies with the same characters, so iconic. Can’t wait for Deadpool 3 and to see what Wolverine is like on the big screen with Deadpool !
  • @MrXon
Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and Logan had aspects of the Essex Corporation (also with aftercredits scene in X-Men:Apocalypse, where they got the Wolverine DNA for Laura). Looks like they wanted to bring Mister Sinister at some point before Disney bought Fox.
  • @MomofthreeMom
Magneto and Xavier are like two side of the same coin
  • @richg7264
My heart breaks every time i think of Wolverine and the Xmen. To think if it wasn't Task with the sentinels, it would be Essex that would engineer the food causing the mutant gene not to be passed on. If it wasn't the Essex corp. it would of been something else..
  • @therealkid617
I believe Xavier was alive again because he put his consciousness into his twin brother who was mentally incapacitated, which is what led to him having those seizures because his brothers brain was never stable
  • @liizzset
Thanks Looper. This timeline video helps alot as a person who watched almost all of these movies. It helps with understanding the actual new versus old timeline. As it was very confusing into knowing exactly, where, why, who, how and what happened through these franchise.

20th Century Fox did such an awesome job with the X-Men, that it's a little hard to believe the MCU will do even a good job.
