Lyrics:
We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fu**in' slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
(Hook)
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door.
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
(Hook)
I've seen a rich man beg I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad and the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

There used be a woman I knew back when I was 20 years old. I liked her alot. She used to hang out with my friends and I but I was super shy. So I found out one night that she loved this song. I also loved this song. Over the weeks I would play this song whenever she was around to get her to come and ask who was controlling the music/who owned the ipod. Eventually we started connecting. 11 years later we are still married and happier than ever. I owe almost everything great in my life to this song. EDIT: 2 years later we are still married and so happy together. This comment thread is honestly my greatest internet memory. Everytime yall comment it reminds of this awesome memory I have. Cheers! EDIT EDIT: TREAT YOUR WOMAN LIKE A QUEEN! Edit 27 March 2024: 500 replies. Can't reply anymore. Glad everybody enjoys my mushy love story about my wonderful wife haha. We are still together for sure and I dont see it ending at any point in the future.

This song came out when I was 19. I am now 43 and have lived every word of this song. Don't ever judge someone, you have no idea the burdens they are carrying. Be kind. To others and to yourself.

I was a hopeless alcoholic. I lost everything but I got sober. I got it back. All of it. Today June 3, 2024 I have four years sober. Never judge anyone lest you be judged. I lived this song.

This song truly explains the pains of life. Never kick a man when they’re down , help them up if can . Most not all people seem to not care about one another anymore. Sad world we live in . Anyone reading this god bless you .

The best cure for depression is helping someone else. Seeing the joy on your face when you change someone’s life, is addictive. You’re gonna want it again. Joy is contagious.
  • God bless any of you listening to this going through a rough time.

He brings real things to light. Pay a little closer attention to those less fortunate than ourselves.

I lived in a homeless shelter, lost everything. I heard this song when I was 17, I’m now 36 and I feel like it foreshadowed my life. I’m now thriving and still currently loving this song.
