Having heard hundreds of acoustic band records during the past 60 years, I wanted to state "for the record" that the Columbia Band discs conducted by Charles Prince seem to be better balanced overall. Prince's Band was made up of studio musicians from several band organizations - all quite talented. Leo Zimmerman was a featured trombonist for decades, occasionally recording solos. Sousa had the most famous soloists but Pryor seems to have been more directly involved in achieving the better sounding (i.e. better balanced) acoustic recordings for Victor. So, the choices seem to be historical (Sousa Band playing Sousa), Pryor, a former Sousa soloist achieving better sounding acoustic discs (Victor) or Charles Prince and his studio bands circa 1904-1922 which also achieved a good balance on acoustic recordings. [By balance, I mean that the overall instrumentation could be heard - always difficult to achieve recording by the horn method].
