Okay, so this one’s an episode I’ve been needing to do for a long time. And I’ll be upfront with you. It’s a topic that really gets under my skin, so I’ll try to be positive. Today we’re counting down my all-time, Top 5 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snubs… bands and artists who are well overdue for the so-called honor, but routinely get passed over year after year. There is a long list of rock hall snubs…From Iron Maiden to The Guess Who from Pixies to Motorhead from New York Dolls to the Smiths from Joy Division/New Order to Slayer from Styx to Foreigner to Jethro Tull and Thin Lizzy, Motley Crue, Toto the list goes on and on. We’re also going to try to figure out why the Rock Hall routinely refuses to induct actual rock artists into their ranks. They’re called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but they seem to have a bias against rock and Roll? I’m not going to be pulling any punches here. I just want to give some love to some classic rock icons that I think we all admire and I want to hear yours too… It’s all coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Billed as “Rock’s Highest Honor”, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame touts their inductees as “the people who shaped the history of rock and roll.” And you know what, I think there are a lot of artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who deserve that honored designation. But then again, there are some who don’t as well. In fact, there are some inclusions as well as exclusions that I just can’t wrap my head around.

I just got into some of this recently with a live stream I did about this year’s class of inductees… If you haven’t seen it, go check it out after this. But for this episode, I want to give you my Top 5 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snubs. Five acts that without a doubt should be in, but have been passed over time and time again.

So the rules for getting inducted are simple, though not easy to accomplish… According to the Rock Hall’s website, “Inductees are recognized for having contributed over 25 years of musical excellence.” And you know what, that’s actually kind of vague. But at the same time, it’s also pretty telling for what it doesn’t say. Which is that inductees are recognized for contributing over 25 years of “rock and roll” excellence. That’s a pretty important distinction… Wouldn’t you say? You would think that an institution that calls itself The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, would actually prioritize inducting “rock and roll” acts into their ranks.

But instead, they seem to have created this open-ended list of genres and they seem to be more focused on being politically correct than inducting based on merit, influence, and longevity. I’m not going to open that can of worms. I’m simply going to offer five acts that should be in.

  • Poll: What are your personal picks for the biggest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame SNUBS?
  • @azspleen
I've reached the point where I completely and utterly ignore The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have rendered themselves irrelevant by their own actions, and I don't see how they could ever undo that. Their snubs no longer matter.
  • @Bruce-kn8lq
My picks are: Grand Funk Railroad, The Guess Who, Three Dog Night, Styx, Jethro Tull
  • @jjsamuelgunn1136
I literally weep over the fact that Paul Rodgers is so underrated and overlooked.
  • @bobbybean6248
Being Canadian, we are dumbfounded that “The Guess Who”, with classics like American Woman and These Eyes by Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, has been snubbed over and over. Even BTO, (Bachman Turner Overdrive) with one of the most played iconic songs in the history of rock, Taking Care of Business along with numerous other hits. Even Randy Bachman, who was a founding member of The Guess Who and BTO could be inducted into the hall. Finally, my personal favourite Canadian iconic band, The Tragically Hip, with the late frontman, Gord Downie. True Canadian royalty. Come one man, it’s a total disgrace that these rock giants are snubbed and Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Harry Belafonte are inducted. Don’t get me wrong, Dolly, Willie and Harry are all ground breaking artists in their own right, but NOT in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

Not having Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Foreigner or The Smiths, who are all long-time icons, but having Jay-Z, is a crime against humanity.
  • @Steven-io2cj
Foreigner, Iron Maiden, Boston, Sammy Hagar, Ozzy Osbourne, The Guess Who, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden, Motley Crue, BTO, Toto, Dio.
  • @suelucey9621
Whoa, whoa, whoa! JETHRO TULL, GUESS WHO and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD.
  • @CuttinEJ
They became absolutely irrelevant to me when they started inducting rappers.
  • @rjkubr
The reality is that NOT being included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a badge of honor!
  • @ltdc426
The fact that Donna Summers got in years before the Doobies tells you all you need to know about the R&R hall of fame.
  • @jschap712
Rush's induction to the Hall of Fame is must viewing. From Neil Peart's subtle swipes (Did he mean to say they've been 'indicted' into the Hall of Fame? Of course he did!) to Alex Lifeson's hilarious pantomime, it is a classic takedown of that institution.
  • @timbarringer
This goes back aways, so people forget, Tommy James and the Shondells. With songs like Crimson and Clover, Crystal Blue Persuasion, Mony Mony, Hanky Panky, Mirage, Draggin' the Line, Sweet Cherry Wine and more. He was one of the original innovators in rock and roll with his song being covered by many popular artist.
  • I agree with all your picks Professor. I would also include The Guess Who, B.T.O, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Scorpions.
  • @bradsmith1362
Styx, Foreigner, Scorpions, Stone Temple Pilots, Meatloaf (with Jim Steinman)
  • @BossNerd
Ok, my friend, you have more power than you think. Simply start the Professor of Rock Hall of Fame. Do it every year, let fans vote - to quote Captain Kirk in the famous episode "Mirror, Mirror" - - - " In every revolution there's one man with a vision"
  • How about Kansas? Their depth of songs and musicianship is unparalleled. Kerry’s song writing , Steve and Robby’s vocals. When they were opening for other bands, they blew them off the stage. They were so well rehearsed Brian May said they were so tight they sounded like a recording playing live.
  • @tf1266
Supertramp is my snub and a half. Breakfast In America and Crime Of The Century are iconic. Pop and progressive rock masterpieces with technical musical brilliance with chord progressions, thematics of the lyricism and incorporation of two opposing vocal styles and ranges. Its a crime of the century they aren't in the hall of fame.
  • It's amazing that Bob Seger did make it into RRHOF on his last shot at eligibility. Also amazing is that the fans did make a difference in pulling him over the hall bias. It would have been a travesty if he was excluded given the man's life played out like what you'd expect of a rock musician: touring endlessly, album after album until breaking through years after his first, building a following long before the world ever heard of him. Bob's perseverance alone deserves recognition, but his place in the hall almost didn't happen. It just shows to go you that they have misplaced priorities if they have them at all.
