40 years later and the twins from Scotland still have one of the most iconic 80's songs

As a Scot, I’m so glad you’ve got round to reacting to the Proclaimers! 😊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

They sing in their native Scottish accent and are proud of it! Their record company wanted them to sing in a more “American” style voice, but they refused to do so. I’m glad they did, they would have lost their originality! Though it’s interesting that their accent is slightly softened when singing, it comes out much stronger when they talk normally! They wrote a song about it and its off their first album. The track is called “Throw the R away” The whole “Sunshine On Leith” album is pretty much flawless, there’s only one weak track on it (Come On Nature). Try “Letter From America” (Band Version) and “Make My Heart Fly” (Band Version) for a slight variation from the Reid brothers.
  • As a Scotsman I can attest to the fact that this song is an absolute stick-on to be played at any Scottish wedding (the party not the ceremony) and you can guarantee that EVERYONE gets thoroughly involved in the ‘da-da-dat-dah’ bit !!! Great song choice whoever put this one forward 🙂

I've always loved the fact that they didn't adopt an American accent like most British bands. I'm English but I'm proud of these guys for singing in their native accent.

The Proclaimers are from Scotland. When an English record producer suggested they try to lose their accents when they sing, they wrote the song "Throw the 'R' Away". They are essentially a one-hit wonder in the US, but have many hits in the UK: "Letter from America", "Sunshine on Leith", "I'm On My Way" (which was in the movie Shrek), "What Makes You Cry", "Let's Get Married" and my favorite "Don't Turn Out Like Your Mother" (if you react to that one, be sure to listen to the very end)

Another vote for 'Sunshine on Leith'...A song that always moves me to tears.
  • The Proclaimers entire album, "Sunshine On Leith" from 1989 where this song originates, is a masterpiece! This album was their breakthrough.
  • This one must be played at every single party and function in Scotland without a doubt. One of those that never leaves the DJ’s playlist.
  • @buidseach
One of the few Scots bands that actually sing in their own Scottish words and accent :)
  • @Wa1kerBros4Ever
Twin brothers Charlie & Craig Reid, still going to this day. Proud Scots whose accents come through so strongly. Brilliant
  • @valogden
The song always brings to mind the fun movie Benny and June starring Johnny Depp. Another Scottish band that was big in the 70s is the band Bay City Rollers " Saturday Night" S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night!
  • @KierenP
As Americans, you guys should check out “Letter From America” by The Proclaimers. That ‘accent’ you hear is Scottish, unmistakably.
  • "is that an accent?" Absolutely it's an accent! That's a Scottish accent he's got there. Haven't you heard one before? 🤣🤭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It’s the proclaimers it’s them! Craig and Charlie Reid twin brothers originally from Edinburgh Scotland. A great song to sing when you’ve had a couple. Being such a catchy and popular song it’s amazing that it only made number 11 UK when it first came out in 88 but went on to be number one in several countries around the world Eg Australia and New Zealand. and eventually made number three on billboard usa in 1993. It is a staple of their catalogue. And they have said it earns five times more money than all their other songs together. It must feel so great to know that you have written a song that everybody loves and jumps around to
  • @kellyclancy8180
Every time I hear this song all I can picture is Johnny Depp chasing a hat and playing with rolls on forks
  • @SPTO
I remember this song when it came out....That darn tune was a real earworm...I'd shout it out on loud trips from time to time LOL
  • Congratulations. You’ve walked into every pub in Scotland at closing time.

The twins what can you say as good if not better live than in the studio. One voice compliments the other the unbelievably tight harmonies are class
