Play 1000's Of Songs With The Travis Picking Pattern - Part 1

Published 2021-08-01
In this video, I am going to show you the most useful fingerpicking pattern you are likely to learn called the travis picking pattern. The travis picking pattern can be found in literally thousands of songs, and has been used by many guitar greats such as Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and Tommy Emmanuel to name a few.

Once you’ve leaned the basics surrounding this pattern, you will be capable of playing many travis picking songs.

In part 1 of this lesson, I will take you through a number of travis picking exercises to ensure you get this fingerpicking pattern down.

The most important part is the bass, and developing the independency between your thumb that will be playing the bass part, and the fingers of your picking hand.

I will show you very effective ways to develop this independence setting you up for what comes in part 2 of this lesson.

This really is the best introduction I have seen to Travis picking. Too often tutors skip the most basic elements of what can be a tricky guitar skill to master. Without good foundations it will always be a struggle.
