In this video I test whether or not you can push things with light! I talk about whether or not light has mass. Instead of tying a fly to a string (previous lassoing a fly video), I make an apparatus in the vacuum chamber that can measure the push of light! And if it doesn't have mass how could it push things, and could you weigh light on a scale?

You can actually push someone with light! Just point laser in someone eyes and he will move!

Your videos are so intelligent! And at the same time very down to earth, reasonable and free. I always look forward to your videos.

Relativistic mass - ugh... As a physicist, I have to agree with Einstein himself who did not care for the concept of relativistic mass (which depends on the observer) and instead preferred to use the concepts of (rest) mass, (relativistic) momentum, and total energy. Mass is a convenient form of energy, and the amount of energy in an object due to its mass is invariant (it does not depend on the observer). Momentum, involves motion and must dependent on the observer. E^2 = m^2*c^4 + p^2*c^2 (where m is the "rest" mass, p is momentum, E is total energy, and c is the speed of light) is how we relate energy, mass, and momentum; and light (via photons) has momentum and energy related to its frequency (not due to any mass). Man, I feel better after getting that off my chest :)

DOES THIS MEAN EARTH IS GETTING PUSHED AWAY FROM SUNLIGHT?
  • Thank you for always teaching me and stimulating my mind! We love you sooo much!!
  • @y33t23
There are actually "sunsails". Scientists try to use them for traveling in space without fuel, but they're not completely developed yet.

I always had this question in my mind, and you conducted just the right experiment to visualise it. I love Action Lab.
