Correction: 1:36 While LSD is Lysergic acid diethylamide, the abbreviation comes from the German “Lysergsäure-diethylamid.”

If you've ever heard of ergot fungi, you've likely heard of the nasty side effects of eating them, including convulsions and hallucinations. But like many a toxic substance, scientists have figured out ways to use ergot for good.

its always hilarious how the most toxic and poisonous thing usually turns unto a pretty decent medicine
  • @GhostNinja0007
A fun fact about ergot, Some believe the dancing plague could have been brought on by food poisoning caused by the toxic and psychoactive chemical products of the ergot fungi

I graduate with my MD in three months. I studied pharmacology in undergrad and med school. I still learn something new whenever I watch these videos. I’m so glad Hank is making science accessible. It really is a unique art form to summarize complex ideas without inaccurately portraying the core concepts.

A minor point, but the LSD abbreviation is from the German name - Lysergsäure-diethylamid Lyserg Saure Diethylamid. The "S" is for Saure, which is German for acid. This is similar to the use of EKG (the kardio is German, but it is ECG in English - ElectroCardioGram). Thank you for the great summary of the medicinal aspects of ergot of rye uses. .

You caught my attention at the Parkinson's section- literally today I started on medication to help with my Restless Legs Syndrome, since I have a family history of Parkinson's and so am high risk for it later in life given my RLS. I've been given a dopamine agonist, so this was brilliant timing to understand things more!

Ergot has always interested me along with other hallucinogenic compounds. It appears that they not only can alter our state of mind but also alter the state of our well being. I hope more research continues

  • Not all parkinson's patients experience tremors. There are two subgroups. My mother had a form without tremors. She "just" had all the other symptoms, like muscle stiffness, slowed movements, small steps, balance problems, constipation, sleeping disorder, and and and ...

Since psilocybin has been shown to increase neurogenesis, although the evidence so far isn't strong, I wonder if it has a protective effect when it comes to Alzheimer's

Love your curly hair! I have close friend who went through chemo and her hair came in curly too. You should do a show about how medicines and hormones affect our hair follicles.
