Today we’re going on a Malaysian street food tour on the mainland (Malay Peninsula) side of the state of Penang in Malaysia. While Penang island typically gets most of the attention, you’ll find some culinary gems across the bridge!

Taman Bukit Curry Mee (maps.app.goo.gl/zgfuXgrfE6dYAQ278) - We’re beginning this Malaysian street food tour with a generations old, Michelin Guide recommended, stall at the market for curry noodles. Price - 6 MYR ($1.27) per bowl

Restoran Ikan Bakar Din (maps.app.goo.gl/MghktsW5vDjdRw2P9) - One of the highlights of my eating trip to Penang was this ultimate amusement park of Malay food at its best. Price - About 120 MYR ($25.48) for everything

Aunty and Uncle Durian (Auntie Uncle Durian & Coconut Stall) - We had a little time in the afternoon and so I looked up durian stalls and found a friendly Aunty and Uncle. Ended up trying a Black Thorn Durian - 118 MYR ($25.01) for whole durian - this is one of the most most famous and expensive durians, and it was spectacular.

Lao San Tong Bak Kut Teh (maps.app.goo.gl/Dhb6p7zFp5KvF1Kv7) - Next up on this Malaysian street food tour we headed to a place many say serves the best bak kut teh in Penang. Price - 70.80 MYR ($15.00) for everything

Bee See Heong (maps.app.goo.gl/YPrspjRaByCXzbjj8) - Next up, this restaurant hasn’t changed since it opened in 1966. The food, a mix of Chinese and Malay, is a gem. Price - 64 MYR ($13.57) for everything

When you’re in Penang, Malaysia, and if you love authentic local food, head over to the Malay Peninsular mainland of Penang for some incredible food.

As a Penangite myself living on the island, I find myself travelling to the mainland for food as well... You're right when you said that some of places on the island are too touristy. We feel it too, and so we keep these hidden gems on athe mainland to ourselves! But now, with your video, these places won't stay hidden for long! Hope you enjoyed Penang while you were there Mark & Ying! Micah's missing though...

"Old?" Dates all the way back to 1966!? Aaaghhh! That's when my wife and I got married! But thanks for yet another excellent video, Mark! At 82, this may be the only way I'll ever get to see it. Bless you and your family for what you do!

  • Hi Mark, Love your videos, the format, the leisure, all of it. Don't change anything. As an expat living on Pulau Penang for the last 9 years just wondering if you are still here and doing more videos? Cheers

The owner realizes the blessing of having an influencer who is trusted reviewing his stall. Worth thousands for in town word of mouth.
