Who will Kamala Harris pick as her running mate?

Published 2024-07-27
Kamala Harris has little time to turn around President Biden’s floundering election campaign in the few months until polling day.

If she is confirmed as the Democratic nominee her choice of running-mate will be critical, shaping the campaign to defeat Donald Trump in November as well as the future of the Democratic Party. Her pick would go head-to-head with JD Vance, the 39-year-old Ohio senator unveiled as Trump’s running-mate at the Republican national convention last week.

With nagging doubts about whether America is ready to elect a black woman to the highest office and Democrats still traumatised by Hillary Clinton’s shock defeat to Trump in 2016, the likelihood is that Harris would pick a white man to join her ticket.

  • Tim Waltz, head of the US Governor's Assoc, would be a good pick.We need the upper Midwest as well.

Conventional Wisdom argues for a " White Southern Guy " As when JFK went with LBJ But that would be the old normal and who knows what the new normal is
  • She has to go with Buttigieg: none of the other candidates have any name recognition and aren't going to get new voter sign-ups. Very poor list, should have included buttigieg.

DonOld needs to leave us alone and go away. He’s already gotten plenty out of us.

It won't be a knob like Vance trumps running mate

Tim Walz is the man to sent Trump to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Both are poor choices. We need to contact Eric holders office and call for Walz to be the pick! He fits all the categories. He has a much better stand on Gaza, and his policies are amazing. He’s pro-labor and is a great attack dog for Vance. He would really help shore up the non-voting block.

V.P. Harris better not choose JB Pritzker!! He's the best governor we've ever had and we want to keep him!!

Harris-Mayorkas is a good ticket, they both know how to solve immigration problems

She needs a VP who is comfortable working under a woman and won’t try and dominate/overpower her as president.
  • NO--contrary to what was stated, winning NC's electoral votes (16) would NOT make up for the loss of PA's electoral votes (19). If it comes down to the "blue wall" states as still seems likely, and Harris wins WI and MI but not PA, NC would not make up the difference and Harris would lose the election. Details matter.
