A lot of times when you're somewhat new to guitar, it's hard to play along with anyone else or a jam track, but you still want to play.

So in this video you'll see a couple of ways that you might want to approach playing by yourself and making up a blues that actually sounds like music and is fun for you.

Excellent video for anyone not used to "goofing around", which is a much needed skill!

This is great, thank you! I'm a 52 yr old wife/mom and finally picking up my guitar again now the kid's are grown and gone and the Blue's was an area I never treaded on because back then, I was all about rock but I want to now! My brother is fantastic at it and I'd love to play with him some day! Never to old to learn!
  • There are so many vids on this subject but you've truly managed to explain the process in a short and understandable manner, Griff. Thank you, much appreciated. Timing, timing, timing...

The "Blues" scale I learned was different. You explaining it as you show it.. is great.
  • As someone who struggles with rhythm and ‘noodling musically’ I really needed this lesson. Love your content and inviting style of presentation. Thanks.

You are an awesome instructor Griff. You make it look easy and you take out a lot of the rigidness by encouraging a freedom when playing individual notes.

I've been waiting 25 years for a video like this! I've always thought I could play blues RHYTHMS, but I never knew how to add fills like this! THANK YOU!

best part about blues, is literally anyone can play it. even better part about blues is with appreciation, you also enjoy it. it's one you can do at any time, any place, anywhere.... and always sounds so good. the world needs more blues... we'd have less wars lol. thanks for reminding me about this, i've been away from the guitar for a bit too long and i'm re learning what i used to do. this gave me a headstart on that lol.

This is like the second video of yours that I've watched - and man they are spot on - what needs to be done concisely w/o taking so long to explain. I'm coming off a burn out break and just starting back up - counting, and keeping rhythm - you've given me a great start to a practice routine. Thanks a ton - I'm hooked on this channel.

Simple but effective. I like it. Never really considered counting out loud before. Been playing 50 plus years and the timing always seemed to come naturally. I can "feel" when to change up. Never too old to learn a new concept. Good lesson.
  • I’ve been trying to play guitar - and the blues - for more decades than I can remember.... and finaly a clear, simple explanation that fits in with all the knowledge I’ve accumulated! Now I need to get the beast out of the cupboard... and plug in!

This is all I've ever wanted to do on guitar. Learn as I'm exploring what my soul needs to say through the guitar. Everyone else already said what they needed to in their songs. I wish to chill and speak my own sorrow through the blues. I really appreciate this!

Counting is important. Subdividing the beat. Good time is crucial. You are teaching great instruction. Shuffles, Time is everything, swing, straight. Love the Blues.

It's so great that John Oliver takes the time out of his busy schedule to teach us the blues.

I've been playing for off and on for about 7 year's now I'm just now getting the filling of the blues thanks griff
  • @jens1475
Thanks a lot for that lesson! I'm definitely a jam-beginner and I really dig your approach.
  • @Recovery12Life
The first three minutes of this lesson changed me forever as a VERY new beginner!

Well taught man, you never think how simple music is at first because awesome sounds so hard but this video made it work. Thank you for your teachings, they'll go a long way man.
