Bc of what 100 years ago was called a "Cordon sanitaire" and nowaday is called a "buffer state". Russia wants some distance between its core and the west. There, saved you 10 minutes.

This is a good question indeed Belarus is maybe the least known from all the countries from the ussr in europe and in these days they follow whatever russia orders, making their independence just a mere formality, they're a russian province in all but name

If you did not know, Belarus In Finnish is "Valko Venäjä" which means White Russia.

What is interesting is that throughout its history, Belarus has been associated with Lithuania and Poland for much longer than with Russia. And all forms of merging between Russia and Belarus were compulsory rather than voluntary.

  • The fact you showed central Asia as part of modern Russia - don't know if i should laugh or cry
  • i have no idea how this channel doesn't have more subscribers, honestly, they create such nice videos with great graphics and nice voice overs. they also put hard work in creating subtitles in different languages.
  • i love your videos because you explain history in simple words so that a person can understand
  • Very poor narration. You missing toons of episodes very important ones which acctually lead to certain points in time and you skipped tons of information about Kiev Rus how Bialorus and Big part of today Ukraine acctually was very strong part of Polish Lithuanian commonwealth for hundreds of years etc.
  • Black Ruthenia wasn't the territory under Mongol occupation! It was the pagan mixed border with Lithuania, compared to the White Ruthenia Ruthenia already christianized, and it still exists nowadays and vaguely corresponds to the Grodno region.
  • I think Belarus has a shared history with the Polish Lithuania commonwealth. What not happened to Russia. The other flag of Belarus with a horse shows how the country is connected to Lithuania. I guess those countries may share some culture between them and maybe could be a little bit different from Russia. The other sign that Belarus people doesn't feel they are Russian is that they didn't want to join Russia. Many countries have many things in common, but don't want to join such as Slovenia and Czechia.

Thank you so much for this. Such an obscure country, but I really needed to know this and you made it easy to disgest.

Love your work but you didn't fully answer the question and left out a lot of key insights. Lukashenko was angling to run for President of Russia in 1999 as Yeltsin's health was declining, only for Putin's ascendance to scupper his plans. In addition, Lukashenko has pushed and pulled Belarus towards Russia's orbit to varying degrees based on his own agenda and maintaining his own power. There's much more to be said about the subject. Still, great work on the historical background!
