How To Make A Li Ion Battery Pack From Street E-Waste

Published 2022-07-17
You find street e-waste everywhere because people are generally messy and don't use dustbins. I collected a pile from Download festival this year. I decided to use the batteries inside to replace the innards on a dead PP9 9v battery which normally fits into my vintage radios. I go through the steps to break the batteries out of the discarded units and marry them up to a very cheap Battery Management module from China to make a variable voltage power pack for very little cost.

The Battery Management System was purchased here s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DFq1J0f the price can vary from your location and exchange rates as with any purchase from China. The tax is taken at source for UK customers so add 20% to the cost.

The batteries used in this are lithium cells salvaged from vapour inhalation devices (youtube do not like the common name as it isn't advertiser friendly! You can actually use any onther lithium rechareable cell including 18650 cells salvaged from old laptop batteries. If you use smaller cells it might be wise to change the charge rate resistor to a 2k or similar to reduce the input current and prevent overheating of the cell. Constantly see this type of e-waste all over the streets. Glad someone as yourself knows how to reuse it for something useful. Nice to see you're up and running once again George.

Excellent stuff George. I particularly liked the battery management boards. The ones I use are fixed to the battery voltage. It’s good that yours can increase the voltage and they don’t seem to create any electrical noise. Cheers Graham
  • Hi George. What a wonderful idea. It’s supprising what you can do with e waist. Excellent idea. 👍
  • Lemon/Lime Green....very nice George. Great work & much love from USA.

I rerally enjoyed that video. I had no idea at all about vaping devices, let alone that each one contains a Lithium Ion battery (or cell)
  • ooh nice Ive got a collection of those on my door step that I have picked up in the street your bench is going to smell of those things !
  • nice one george i bought one of these 2 months ago to replace the 15 volt battery in an old avo 8 saddly i paid £4.80 from ebay.

Good to see you back George! Nice project, with no on/off switch what is the battery shelf life like?
  • Nicely recycled George. Plenty of life left in most of those batteries no doubt. Any RF noise from the boost converter?
  • That’s a really clever idea. A good use for old junk. Can you hear the switch mode power supply on the radio?

George, very interesting. What are these things you recovered from the dustbin ? Are they Ecigs or something else ? Not familiar with them. Good stuff
