Imagine telling someone in 1952, that people in 2024 will be able to watch this scene on small handheld devices anywhere or anytime we wanted to?
  • It's been 70 years now and it still keeps making me smille!
  • @kruiff
One of the greatest movie scenes of all time.

You know what's really crazy about this movie? It was made in the 1950s but set in the 1920s. That's like a movie today being set in the 1990s. Perspective can alter so much. Makes me appreciate all the times I spent singing and dancing in the rain.

It is impossible to watch this clip and not have a smile on your face. Mr. Kelly made cinema history with this effort!

For so long, rain has been widely associated with gloominess and depression in many cultures. Gene Kelly smashes that common metaphor to pieces here. Not only does the rain not take away from his joy, it ADDS to his joy. Fantastic.

I think it's safe to say that Gene Kelly's rain dance scene has reached iconic status. I worked as a recreation therapist in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in which I'd feature Gene in a program and show this--the patients' faces would light up. Once while I did this program, a newly admitted patient who wasn't adjusting well came. When I showed the rain dance scene, he got excited and opened up: "Oh my goodness! I remember when this came out--I met my wife that year! I loved Gene Kelly's dancing. I loved 'Singin' in the Rain'--it was raining when it opened in the theaters." I replied, "It sounds like life was imitating art." He laughed and said, "Yes, it certainly was." After that, this patient stopped being argumentative and became social with everyone. What an effect Gene Kelly had on this man!
  • Gene Kelly has a masterful combination of grace, precision, and masculine energy. There's no one else like him

  • I'm singin' in the rain Just singin' in the rain What a glorious feeling I'm happy again. I'm laughing at clouds. So dark up above, The sun's in my heart And I'm ready for love. Let the stormy clouds chase. Everyone from the place Come on with the rain I've a smile on my face I walk down the lane With a happy refrain Just singin', singin' in the rain Dancin' in the rain la ri la la ri la, I'm happy again! I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain! (instrumental solo) Dancin' and singin' in the rain...

I like to walk in the rain, I feel so comfortable, maybe it was watching this scene as a child that made me unafraid of raining days
