Understanding your glasses prescription can seem daunting, but it's essential for ensuring you receive the correct eyewear. Whether you're looking to learn how to read your eyeglass prescription or simply want to know what your glasses prescription means, a basic understanding can help you feel more confident when discussing your vision needs with your optometrist. Typically, a spectacle prescription includes values for sphere (SPH), cylinder (CYL), and axis, which indicate the degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism, and its orientation, respectively. Knowing how to read your prescription for glasses can help you understand the specific corrections your eyes require.

For those new to prescription eyeglasses, it's crucial to grasp the meaning behind the numbers and abbreviations on your eyewear prescription. Learning how to read your glasses prescription involves recognizing the significance of each value, from the SPH indicating your overall lens strength to the CYL and axis that address astigmatism. This knowledge not only aids in understanding your vision correction but also empowers you to make informed choices when purchasing prescription eyeglasses.

Have you ever thought about being a professor? You certainly would be good at it! Thanks for the knowledge!
  • @dorothee2314
I wish somebody had been able to explain it as clearly as you did when I was in medical school. Thank you for your videos!
  • @richs6205
All those weird numbers and now they make a bit of sense. Thanks for your comprehensive explanation.
  • @drupiROM

  • @ONLYinANTARCTICA
This video is exactly what we need. I feel like I’m back in university taking EYE101 course. Great content.
  • I would LOVE to be a -5.5! I’m a -13 😐. Even with this eyesight, I’m thankful to God often that my vision can be corrected with contact lenses, but it’s so hard to find eyeglasses that I don’t dislike. I am also in the early stages of a cataract in my right eye. I’ll be trying to fight that with good/better nutrition. I feel certain God will help me with that. I’ve just recently found your channel. Keep up the good work! I’m learning so much. I’ll be praying you’ll be able to endure as long as God wants you to endure. 🙏🙂

Thank you so much for the convert minus to plus section at the end. I just got a new eye test and the new prescription was using the + instead of -. The numbers were very different and I thought my eyes must have changed a lot, but it turns out it's just written in a different form.

Great video! Gave me a much deeper respect for Optometrists...
  • Hello Dr Allen; Kudos and thumbs UP for a great tutorial for people who wear glasses to understand what it all means! As a licensed optician, I try to explain to my new wearers exactly what the doctor prescribed and how it's going to help. I wish your videos were available when I was starting my career (some 30+ years ago). It's quite possible I would have chosen optometry. I always enjoy seeing your new videos as well as old ones. I'm always trying to keep myself up-to-date. Thank you! -Mitch, Brooklyn, NY

Coincidentally, today I am studying the optics chapter for my next exam on ophthalmology 😊 this was helpful

Thank you so much, I just got bifocals (and/or progressives) at 25 after never having more than maybe reading glasses as a kid 😭 It'd explain my horrible reading ability despite loving it, I have one axis at 10 and another at 75! So no wonder things felt blurred together lol! It's gotten almost constant in the last half a year in a few ways, so I'm excited to have some answers now.
