The Pontiac Grand Prix has a very mixed reputation. From the bland commuter car to the supercharged GTP - this weird front wheel drive V8 definitely was an experiment for GM. Today we hop in this full bolt on Pontiac Gran Prix GXP from ZZperformance. It has an upgraded cam and a V8 roar - sending it's power straight to the front wheels. One of the most bizarre cars I've driven as a project, let me take you on a drive and tell you what it's all about.

  • Pontiacs were crazy popular here back in the day here in Michigan. I remember seeing them all the time almost 10 years ago. I wish gm could have saved them

My cousin had a blue 2006 Monte Carlo SS with the 5.3. Purchased it right out of the showroom floor. Definitely a sleeper and hurt quite a lot of feelings of people that thought it was just a S.C. V6. From a stand still, it was basically pointless on the streets. It would roast the tires right off but catch it already rolling and it would hand a lot of people their a$$. I'll admit that was a fun car and a sleeper from the factory for sure.

GXP was overlooked and underrated! This video just jacked up the prices 😂

Even without the zzp suspension, these gxps came with bilstein suspension meaning they could handle well out of factory
  • Out of the LS4 cars, I’m going to choose the less known Buick Lacrosse Super. It’s the best looking out of the group.
  • The GXP/GTP and Cobalt SS are some of the best sleepers. Everyone sees them and goes "oh an economy car" and then get absolutely destroyed.
  • I got a 2008 GXP back in 2020 with 80k miles for only $4,000. i will probably never sell it I love it so much. super underrated cars
  • Glad you got to review this car. I got a mostly stock 2007 GXP in Black with a ZZP cutback & I was waiting for you to review a LS4 car one day , One other little thing you might not have know is that the ls4 can be found in 2 other cars as well besides the Impala SS, GM also put it in the Monte Carlo SS and the Buick LaCrosse Super.

Quick tip, if you have a stock ls4 and your cruising with it in 4 cyl mode, you can blip the throttle without it lurching and it will change over to 8 cylinders, then go nuts. Smoother changeover than trying to accelerate out of 4 cyl mode.
  • The w body platform is so underrated. They handle far better than have any right to
  • Amazing how far transmissions have come in 18 years. Can def hear the difference, the bog and not staying in the PowerBand. Love seeing reviews of forgotten cars like this.
  • @ecastoe
Always wanted this car haha. I didn’t care that I didn’t make sense then and I don’t care that it doesn’t make sense now lol

I have driven, and been a passenger in both an Impala SS, and a GP GXP. Both cars are actually a lot of fun, they are pretty quick, bone-stock, and fall into the sleeper category. Also, In Canada, the GXP came with Brembo brakes and Bridgestone Potenza tires on them, stock. Unheard of from domestic car makers at the time. It was funny that the front wheels were wider than the rears, but for an obvious reason. The suede and leather interiors were pretty nice too, and the vehicle felt more special and sporty than the same era Camry or Accord. I think it's awesome you have done all of these videos of the ZZP cars, I think you have made a lot of viewers aware that you can make GM platforms fun and reliable, and have something more unique than what most people drive.

Finally!!!! I had an 06 Dark Cherry Metallic GP GXP with a magnaflow exhaust. It pulled hard, was comfortable, sounded amazing, got good mpg on the highway, and had a good (for 2000s gm) interior. The HUD and staggered wheel setup were pretty cool too. Definitely have to disable the DoD, it shouldn’t hurt fuel economy and makes the car feel and sound much nicer.

I liked my 00 Continental more than my Ls 05 grand prix. The Lincoln had a 4.6 dohc v8, similar gearing at 3.56:1, and it had a limited slip. Its funny because Ford rated the Conti at 275 hp back in the mid 90s when it was equipped with B heads and mark viii/navi intake cams. By 99, the Conti had the same C heads and cams as a 99/01 Cobra but they kept the power rated at 275. My bone stock 2000 model ran low 14s bone stock!
  • @DMSR-35
Just throw it in reverse and now you have a rear engine rear wheel drive V8 up to about the top of the reverse gear
  • @mannyd.576
Yup. GXP all day over the SS Impala!! Thanks for the nostalgia David. That is a gem right there!

I bought a 2008 Grand Prix GXP about 8 years ago and it's probably the best car I've ever owned. Of course, with it having over 200k miles on it it goes through a little oil, but it moves around in traffic really well and is fun on the old winding country roads.
