Blender VFX animation of a UH 1 Huey helicopter doing a landing just in front of a combat zone during the Vietnam war.

Here is a one shot I rendered inspired by the Coppola's Apocalypse Now movie. I was learning and getting myself up to date for the new 2.83 version of blender and decide to recreate a landing scene from the film into Blender.
This allowed me to improve my animation skill of a flying helicopter in 3D (my first attempt:    • Video  ).

The smoke was created with the new fluid system of Blender 2.83, Mantaflow. The parameters of this system are complicated unlike the old one, but it is much more efficient. There is praticaly no artifact in the smoke simulation.

For the character, I used a model: "SOLDIER WWII USA" made by Albin Merle: www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/military/character/sold…
Animation are from Mixamo, skining done in blender.

Inspired by Colonel Kilgore arrival's scene from Apocalypse Now

➡️ Scene set-up
Assets modeled & animated on Blender 2.9
Assets textured on Subtance Painter
FX Simulation on Blender Mantaflow
Render with Blender 2.9 Cycles with 128 samples (About 500 frames // 6-10 mins per frame) on a GTX 1070
Post-production and compositing on After Effects 2020

Thanks for watching!

This is absolutely fantastic, The only negative is that they should have left out the soldier at the end , the reason: Up to that point it looked like a video from real life. The soldier removed the suspension of disbelief.

Oh man. This is great stuff! Really impressive.
  • I swear, this has to be one of very few vids that haven't threw in Fortunate son all over again. Very nice animation breakdown! Hat's off
  • Whoa! I'm pleasantly surprised! Nice work. I always have trouble motion tracking but yours was seamless!

This is really cool! Video wizardry was well done; additionally, I especially liked the soundtrack you chose. Just starting out with Blender...making donuts, exploding buildings, desktop water features, etc., learning the ropes. Rendering times are long for videos, but results are awesome (using Cycles). Videos like this keep me wanting to try stuff.

these videos are insane! if i were u i would write a short story and make it happen with this kind of animation. a simple story with this cgi skill and could find yourself in the film industry real fast.
