This Legendary Rock band knew that this song would be really big. So It was perplexing when it finished in 3rd place out of the four singles released from their 1981 blockbuster album Escape. I’m talking about Don’t Stop Believin’ By Journey. It was a strange song in that Steve Perry’s immaculately sung chorus doesn’t show up until the last 30 seconds of the song and Neal Schon has a blazing solo in the first 30 seconds but it’s promise would grow over the decades after it was released and when Glee wanted to cover it in their landmark episode the Neal Schon in our interview said he was pretty nervous that it would ruin the song and turn it into Mary Poppins, taking all of the Heaviness out of it. Instead it helped turn it into the biggest selling digital rock single ever. In a star studded episode including Carlos Santana, Toto, Sammy Hagar and Panic! at the Disco, we get the story from the principal band members of Journey including Co-writers Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain and current lead singer Arnel Pineda…

it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and Hotel California by The Eagles amongst others But today we have a star studded episode with Sammy Hagar, Carlos Santana, toto, Panic at the Disco and principal members of the rock and roll hall of fame band Journey to break down the making and meaning of the their monumental 80s anthem Don’t Stop Believin’ the biggest selling digital rock song ever.

Written by the legendary trio of founder guitarist Neal Schon, GOAT Singer Steve Perry and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, here we have an in depth look at what inspired every part of this song from the guitar solo in the first few seconds that scared the hell out of record executives to the Chorus being almost an afterthought.

How the song went from being an also ran of their massive album escape with two songs doing better to its resurgence in it’s use in the Sopranos and Glee which made Guitar Neal Schon very nervous to the way it has blown other legends away who are still in awe of the power of this incredible anthem. Get ready Streetlight people. here is the definitive story of Don’t Stop Believin now as we go into these interviews I do want to thank our sponsor Zenni eyewear the only glasses I’ll ever wear Zenni is spectacular you can’t beat the price, the quality, the features and the selection Go to Zenni.com to up your game.

  • The iconic voice of Steve Perry is what made Journey. One of the greatest gifts to the music industry and can never be replaced.
  • I absolutely love the mutual respect that Steve and Arnel have for each other. Both are true gentlemen with a lot of class.
  • I graduated from high school in 1982 & Don't Stop Believing was our class song. I have always been a fan of Journey and it always blows my mind when I hear the younger generations singing this song
  • Journey had an immeasurable impact on me and my life. I've spent close to 45 years learning from this band. Their music is timeless. And, Steve Perry is, absolutely, without question, without any doubt, the most influential vocalist of my life.
  • @EdSZiomek
Crazy me, but the Houston live performance was a nuclear supernova event for the song, the riffs, percussion, and VISUALS. STILL KILLS ME!
  • I've been a Journey fan from when they were a 'jam' band before Steve Perry. As good as Arnel is, I just can't wrap my head around Journey without SP. What a gift was his voice!
  • @jdekong3945
Very happy for Neil & Jonathan & the band, love Arnels humbleness of being in the band and he is without a doubt a huge talent, but for me Journey always was Steve
  • @captcorajus
I've been a professional DeeJay for about 15 years now. It doesn't matter what age group I'm playing to, the cultural make up of the crowd matters not, when I play this everyone sings along... and the emotion of the crowd is always palpable. This song really touches people. True classic. Thanks!
  • I was a sophomore or junior in high school when this album came out. I think we wore out the cassette in my car in a matter of weeks:) A couple years back I was photographing a senior prom and was absolutely awestruck to see these kids, 40 years later dancing and singing with the song at the top of their lungs. Not to mention it brought all the teachers that were there on to the dance floor(singing as well) for a monumental ending to the special night. #unforgettable
  • You KNOW Arnel Pineda is not lying when he says how much respect he gives to Steve Perry when even Arnel refers to him as, "Mr. Perry" time stamp 14:40 ... Then, all the past interview clips of all the other bands/singers/musicians giving credit to Journey is simply proof of the impact and timelessness of this band. I ain't gonna lie, Adam, your interview with Toto is probably one of my all-time favorite interviews. The guys loved sitting down with you and just talking about the past, present and future with this shared love of music we all share. This video, with all the interview clips... wow, thank you so much for this!
  • @patti9339
Steve owns that song live. His vocals were amazing.
  • @sloan_005
Was a Journey fan before ‘Escape’, had every album they ever made. Am sooo thankful I was a teenager in HS the early 80’s and saw them live in concert. Steve Perry is just amazing! I refuse to see them without him; wouldn’t care if he sat on a stool and sang karaoke. Just not the same without him.
  • I got to see Journey live for the first time in 2017 here in Houston. I'm 51 so I've heard "Don't Stop Believin" a million times. But when the piano started playing those familiar notes, I got goosebumps all over. Everyone in the audience was singing along.
  • @edlawn5481
When Carlos Santana lets you solo on a record like "Everybody's Everything" when you're 17 years old, you know you're good.
  • I first saw Journey on the Escape Tour, November 1981, the day before Thanksgiving. That was a life changing night, and the biggest life affirming moment was when Steve sang Mother Father. I was in shock, and hearing that Angelic Voice resonate through the whole arena, my jaw dropped to the floor - in complete awe. I was 15. Thanksgiving Day was at our place with extended family that next day, but I spent the entire day looking for Don't Stop Believing on the radio stations. And yes, the stations were playing it on heavy rotation - like every hour. It will always be a mystery as why it wasn't a bigger hit, but it was with me, all through these many decades. I'd play as first song of the year at New Years, first song on my birthdays as well. I have no idea how my life would have been without Journey, Steve Perry, Don't Stop Believing. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
  • No question one of the greatest touchstone songs of the 80s. For me, it instantly transports you back in time when you hear that iconic piano intro. The world stops for a moment, and you're that 13 year old kid in Junior High again for 4 minutes. An amazing song that has stood the test of time!
  • @spaceman3952
Song still gives me chills. Steve Perry is indeed the GOAT. Rick Beato does a “What Makes This Song Great” on it that is awesome. Thanks Prof!
  • I remember a childhood friend bringing the album Infinity to my house when it was first released and said “You’ve got to hear this band Journey.” I was blown away and immediately liked them. I bought my own copy and practically wore the grooves off playing it. The following album introduced the hit “Lovin’, Touching, Squeezing” which all the girls really loved causing us teenage boys to lose interest in the band. They lost that cool factor for a period of time. But when Escape was released my love of the band was renewed. Journey is an incredible band. I love their music.
