Full Lyrics:

I've seen good men spoiled
Chained to their jobs like hounds
They work and sleep and work again
In the darkest nights they howl
Their cries are a warning
To everyone following
No man should stand to work all of his days
And have nothing at the end of them

I got no money but the change
That jingles in my pockets
Reminding me how little I have
And as for time I am
Powerless to stop it
It keeps rambling on like a mad, wandering man

My papa was a howlin' man
Traded in his youth
Sold his dreams and all of his days
For the great American ruse
And my dear papa gave me
Lessons in regret
He said all that he'd done would be for nothing
If I followed in his steps

I got no money but the change
That jingles in my pockets
Reminding me how little I have
And as for time I am
Powerless to stop it
It keeps rambling on like a mad, wandering man

My papa taught me how to howl
How to bare my teeth and growl
He taught me that the hand that feeds
Deserves to be bitten when it beats
He taught me how to break my chains
And that money ain't worth a thing
And that no man should get
More of my time than me, than me

I may never be a rich man
But I can, make sure that I am free
I may never be a rich man
The rich man will never have me, never have me
I may never be a rich man
But I can make sure that I am free
I may never be a rich man
The rich man will never have me, never have me

I got no money but the change
That jangles in my pockets
Reminding me how little I have
But as for time, as for time
It's mine
it's

The Crane Wives really said "The workers have nothing to lose but their chains" and I'm here for it
  • @tea_n_ink
"Taught me that the hand that feeds deserves to be bitten when it comes to beat" has gotta be one of the RAWEST lines i've ever heard

the line “no man should get more of my time than me” drove me very spitefully through the end of the school year after having sacrificed so much of myself for good grades.

As the son of a man that died young because he was overworked, this hits HARD. I mean, I loved my dad, but in my eyes, he was a really sad individual, the kind of person that lived for his work and wasted away all his free time sleeping from sheer exhaustion, never have I seen him have any hobbies besides watching TV, and all the people he seemed to know where from his family or from work. He did so much for me and my mom and I'm really thankful, but I don't care how selfish it may sound, I never want to be like him.

the only problem with the crane wives is never being able to choose a favorite song because of how good they all are

The fact that the chat began yelling the last verse in all caps is the kind of kinship I crave for

I’ve always had a pretty good idea of what this song meant, but it wasn’t until reading the very first annotation in this video that I truly grasped the theme. This song is reminding us that our time is limited, and not to waste it on doing what we’re supposed to. We should spend our time how we want to, not how society or the people we know want us to. As for me, I’d like to spend my time listening to The Crane Wives, singing along with all the other fans in the live chat. To quote someone in the chat during the premiere, “Good music attracts good people.”

Leave it to my 16 year old kiddo to introduce me to some new tunes. All I can say is wow! Amazing.
  • My dad died in 2020, at the young age of 48, as a direct consequence of being chained to his job, which took a physical toll that he never stopped to try and fix until it was too late. I always have a little eternal flame of rage over this, and every time I hear this song it just explodes.
  • My "father" is a prison guard. He let his job corrupt him and abused me because of it... this song hits me hard. It's a hard feeling to shake that he was condemned for no reason, and that I was condemned to his abuse. I'm sorry for the tangent, I just had to say it somewhere.
  • Anyone who listens to The Crane Wives is automatically cool, I said it in premiere chat, and I’ll say it again <3

Gentle reminder to The Crane Wives that I would die for each and every member, does not matter who.

Something about the moral of biting the hand that feeds you when it beats you is unforgettable to me
  • @Ashhhhh330
why is nobody talking about “he taught me that the hand that feeds deserves to be bitten when it beats”
  • @Dogbite295
Just started getting into the crane wives a week ago, real good band

At first I thought this wasn't my type of music, it's got a different feel to it than what I normally listen to if that makes sense. Then the line "he taught me that the hand that feeds deserves to be bitten when it beats" hit me so fucking hard lol. I love this and the message behind it.
  • I'm someone who just completed school with quite good grades and now has the opportunity to live "a happy life", I could try to become rich or whatever. Instead I chose to become a teacher and I'll make sure to teach everyone that 'they may never be a rich man but that they can make sure that they are free' and that they need to use their time on themselves and those who are dearest to them. Also: great music and I'm really enjoying the lyric videos! Keep it up.

my favourite thing about the intro to this song, is how the description for the guitars is timed so perfectly that you read about the electric guitar just as it joins in. something so very perfect about it

This song has spoken to me in a way im sure many will never understand. It resonates with me so deeply that i feel compelled to cover it (properly of course with respect to the original composition) i know you will probably never read this but i wanted to ask permission to perform this for people so that i can share your message
