6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for YouTube. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.

Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free YouTube Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!

And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on YouTube.

I do online lessons too. Email me : [email protected]

This beginning rhythm guitar video teaches The Shuffle Pattern. Guitarists substitute this rhythm guitar technique if strumming open-position major chords like E, A, and D sounds too jangly, boomy and "big." Blues and blues-related guitar styles employ The Shuffle Pattern frequently. Come Together by The Beatles is a great example of the D shuffle and the A Shuffle. There are lots of creative variations on the basic pattern taught here. Take it slow and enjoy the learning process ! You can do it !

I have been playing guitar for over 45 years. This is simply one of the best introduction lessons to guitar that I have ever seen. Great job. 👍🏻
  • I find long videos like this more appealing than the short ones. Looks like a real one-o-one class. You give time to think, to adjust, to understand, to repeat. You are a very good teacher, Jonathan.

I'm 67 years old, been scratching at a guitar since I was 14. Finally, someone explaining it in a way I can understand. Thank you.
  • Being a beginning guitar player I ran across you on YouTube, sure a lot of the videos were old but after looking it over the information it is not only fresh but more valuable then you'd realize at first glance. After buying the "Easy Guitar Chord & Lead Tricks" and having the physical book in hand and re-watching the accompanying videos with it, eventually it began to sink in. Being 72 years of age has it's challenges both physical and mental, there must be millions out there that share the same problem. However, after struggling for a good while(well over a year) I am now watching your videos on your channel and my confidence is overwhelming. I have traveled the world many times and done things most people could only dream of but, learning to play a guitar was one of the biggest challenges for me. It was Song Bike with Jonathan Kehew's videos that opened the door for me and I am certain it will for many who try. The Secret is: if you don't get it? Do it again, and again, and again until it comes, eventually it will. Thank You, Jonathan
  • I’ve watched this video more than once because your teaching style is the Archetype of how to teach guitar. 😎👍

I’ve been lead singer in band since the 80s I lost my sight and 87 I started playing guitar. I’m 62 and for a blind person you explain it everything so perfectly well that a blind guy can understand it and play along so thank you. 😊😅appreciate it.

its crazy to see that this was released 10 years ago but since then so many people still return. Keep up learners, its a long road ahead but its fun. 90% of people who start learning an instrument give up a year in. Dont give up.
  • This guy has a serious talent not only in playing, but in teaching. He actually takes the time for you to absorb what is actually going on. If You are frustrated, don't give up. Watch this guy.

Love your lessons. I've had a guitar for over 20 years but never really took the time to learn to play except for basic chords that served me well. Now newly retired, I have time to play and enjoy my guitar and to learn and get better. Thank you!
  • Great teacher who keeps it simple. I play the harmonica blues and kinda scratch the guitar. Keep it simple, nothing flashy.
  • I have been watching Johnathan for a few years now and repeatedly follow his teaching. I am a beginner and slow at learning. He is very patient and inspiring for all who want to learn. Thank you 🙏 so much for your good WORKS !😎

Wow! Such a great lesson. I'm already singing hound dog to my beagle.
  • @number8pencil
Such a great job teaching. Every time a question pops in my head you immediately answer it a split second later in the video. You're a gifted teacher. Just bought the book. Thanks.
  • Thanks! You have a very patient pace of teaching. Lots of YouTube lessons move at a blistering pace for beginners like myself. I'm 42 and attempting to continue something I left behind in my childhood. Keep up the good work!
  • Jonathan, I am a 48 year "young" learner. You are a natural. Cheers.

What an excellent lesson. Blues Shuffle in 6 keys and easily presented. Wish I learnt this a long time ago. Thanks so much.
  • @jimmyb4728
Out of all the YT guitar lessons free or not, yours are the easiest to understand stand. They aren't easy because there simple there easy because of the way you explain them. Thanks for the help Jonathan.
