How do you let go of bitterness? What's your favorite Christmas/holiday movie?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright wish you a happy festive season with a highly requested holiday episode on Klaus! They talk about the concept of the reframe when Jesper, Klaus, and the townspeople have perspective shifts that bring them to a better place. Jonathan explains why Klaus is a blueprint for how to get out of the misery and loneliness that some experience around the holidays. Alan dives into the technical mastery of Klaus's hand-drawn animation - they invented new technology! And Alan's tears have finally dried up... it's a Christmas miracle?

One small detail that I still like is that, when Jesper's father comes to retrieve him, he notices that his son is looking sad, he sits down in front of him before leaving and inquires what the situation is. His father genuinely cares and is attentive and I like that.

Hello! Just a little technical clarification. I am the person who supervised the lighting in Klaus and we never used machine learning to do it, it is actually a team of 30 artists who made it by hand with the help of a tracking system from an in-house software. If you are curious to see how it is actually made go check the youtube channel of The SPA Studios, we released bunch of timelapse videos with me voicing over them to explain the process. Thank you and glad lots of you love Klaus ! Merry Christmas !

My favorite part about this movie is how each detail of todays Christmas is slowly revealed. The wagon is pulled by a horse until they need something stronger and we get reindeer, the wagon breaks and we get the sleigh, a child sees them making a huge jump and suddenly the reindeer can fly, it’s just such a great explanation for everything.

One of my favorite moments is when the little girl writes her name for the first time and just looks at it and says “sooo.. that’s my name???” She’s around my child’s age and just imagining them being in that sort of environment. It just guts me. Instant tears.

I love how fondly Klaus looks at the little boy playing with his toy pullstring frog, going so far as to drop his hood to see it better. It's basically his way of getting to experience sharing his toys with the children he never got to have.

i’m so glad klaus is getting more recognition. despite its oscar nomination it flew unnoticed for a lot of people. it’s my all time favorite christmas movie and even though it’s only been out a couple of years it has a nostalgia and charm to it that not many movies have anymore.

Alva had initially been planning to leave the town for years, and was generally apathetic about her job, only to change her tune when the illiterate children ask her to help them to write their names. The children go from attending school just to write Klaus for a toy, to attending because they genuinely want to learn.
-
I love this movie so much!! My favorite scene is when the kids go to school for the first time and Alva thinks that if she just teaches them one thing they’ll leave her alone, but then they actually get really excited and inspired at the idea of learning more. Modern schooling has turned education into grueling competitive labor, but deep down human beings really are curious creatures with the desire to always want to know more. And that scene is a reminder that learning can be a joyous activity.

I love how the interactions between Klaus and Jesper totally feel like a Pacha and Kuzco interaction—especially when they’re laughing together in the sleigh

What I also love about the montage is that the parents start to do nice things because of the kids. The kids don't see the difference between the two groups and don't understand why they hate each other. And by doing good deeds they show the adults that their near sighted few may be not the right way to live life. We can all learn something from a kids view on this world. Differences may be smaller/less important than we may first seem to think :)

I have holiday related trauma and I was honestly super frustrated that my in laws wanted to watch a "Christmas movie". But this movie legitimately healed something in me

Klaus is definitely one of the best christmas movies, and it is an interesting take on the origins of Santa Claus. Great psychological study of the characters of Klaus.
-
The SHEER ammount of tears i shed when Jesper said '' i get to see my friend'' at the end of the movie cannot be understated. Best christmas movie i have ever seen.
-
Klaus is such a triumph for animation, especially for advocating the nearly lost magic of 2D.
-
KLAUS is SO criminally underrated. I hope more people will get to watch this BEAUTIFUL movie
-
Another thing I really loved about this movie is the little Sámi-girl ❤ She's just adorable and it makes me so happy that they're showing Sámi culture in an animated film.
-
One of the best Christmas movies I've EVER seen in my life. Klaus is a BEAUTIFUL movie. ❤🎄
-
I love that there’s no magic in this movie, just kindness and yet that makes it more magical.

I am not a Christmas-y person in general (raised Muslim) but this movie had me sobbing and actually felt like it gave me a reason to believe in the holiday. Also, as a teacher who is currently going through the same struggles of identity and purpose as Alva did, I can't help but get super emotional while watching Klaus.
-
I literally thought to myself today, "I wish Cinema Therapy would do a video on Klaus for the holidays". As a teacher, the part of the film that always gets me is when Alva's eyes soften when she meets kids who have a genuine desire to learn.
