Joaquin Phoenix has got to be one of the greatest actors ever. Since I first saw him in Gladiator, his acting has always been beyond convincing. In the role of Commodus, you can see in his eyes that he carries a grief for being rejected by his father his whole life. It's unbelievable how he manages to become and live his characters to the fullest.

What I loved about Phoenix's interpretation of Joker is that it is a broken tragic character whose evil was imposed upon him due to external forces. What I loved about Ledger's joker is that he was so bone chillingly true to the anti-hero archetype, one who didn't care about the consequences of his actions. Ledger and Phoenix set the bar high for incoming Joker iterations and interpretations.

Not an audition, he didn’t have to audition, he was in the mind of the Director since they were writing the script. He was the only option. Literally the script was written for him to play Joker.

I love that he made me regret groaning about him being the Joker. He made us love him and our hearts broke with his and we understood his rage. Joaquim became the Joker as much as Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, and others.
