“Christmas is coming and so millions of children will ask their parents this question: Is Santa real?

The modern-day Santa’s that inhabit shopping malls have their roots in the life and example of a Saint Nicolaus. Nicolaus was born to a wealthy family in the third century. When his parents died, he distributed their wealth to the poor and became a priest and became legendary for his profound generosity and care for people.

Stories spread far and wide about his generosity. The most famous incident from his life is the night he dropped a small sack of gold coins through the window to the house of a family in desperate need. By that time Nicolaus had become a bishop and the father woke when he heard the sack being dropped through the window. Looking outside he caught a glimpse of the red and gold robes of the Nicolaus who had hoped to remain anonymous.

The father told everyone he knew about Nicolaus’ generosity, and the beauty of anonymous giving was unleashed in the world. People everywhere began giving anonymously and the spirit and legend of Saint Nicolaus grew… and has continued to grow century after century… and lives on today!

Nicolaus is perhaps the inventor of anonymous giving. 1700 years after his death, his Spirit lives on as a confounding reminder of the obligation we have to those who live life suffering on the brink of despair.

Is Santa real? Santa is most real not when we spoil our children with gifts, but when we teach them the spirit of Nicolaus by giving generosity to those most in need, bringing them a comfort and joy that we so often take for granted.

So, this Christmas, go out of your way to be the difference that makes all the difference for someone, somewhere, and together let’s bring a little hope, comfort, and joy to those who need it more than we may ever need anything”

Matthew, I’m feeling rather humbled and grateful this Christmas. My son who has his own business and works 10-12 hour days, went to our priest and asked him who is the person most needy. The priest told him of a lady who he personally knew who was having financial difficulties. My son gave the priest the money and told him to give it to her anonymously. I am grateful he understands the true meaning of Christmas and so, Santa is real! The true joy in Christmas is giving. I’m sure that there are lots of stories like this, I’m fortunate that I am able to see the joy from the giver. I tell this so that someone else might read this and be inspired to give a hand up to someone who might need a little help! Thank you Matthew Kelly.
  • I haven't had family to celebrate Christmas with for many years, so giving to others in need, single parents, young Mothers is a real joy which I look forward to each year. Get your kids involved in doing something like this and it might just 'snowball'.

If it was not for your wisdom and spiritual guidance I would be a grinch like all my other freinds. Thank you for making this video and showing me a different veiw of it. I know understand just how wrongly I reacted to it thanks for keeping me on track, and have a blessed Christmas Mathew!!!

My church gives us the opportunity to help infants and young children in need every Christmas. I love being able to take part in this. It brings joy into my heart.

We receive joy in giving to a charity that buys wheelchairs for children in Mexico who have no money. They send us a picture of the smiling children in their new wheel chairs, and this is where the joy comes from. Love this!
  • There is nothing better then being Santa! I am seeing 2nd generation followers and the parents still have the same smiles as they did when they were small. Merry Christmas! Santa

Someone spilled the beans to my daughter way too early. I had to explain to her: we are all Santa. We are Santa to one another. She was So Sweet .!!! I miss her. Please pray for us and all prodigals and their parents. Kids canceling their parents today is at epidemic levels and we need to be talking about it and finding how to fix it.

@Matthew Thx! In this season that can be extra painful for us singles, you remind me to "Give...until it hurts!" (Mother Teresa), as balm for the pain. I need to see what volunteering I can do on Christmas Day, perhaps for the homeless.

Thanks for your videos Matthew! I always enjoy them. I was wondering though, how did we ended up celebrating St Nicholas on Christmas? Unfortunately the secular world makes it more about Santa than the birth of Jesus.
