Ballad of the Green Berets performed by The U.S. Army Band

Published 2022-06-10
Special Forces was established as a basic branch of the U.S. Army in 1987. The branch's lineage, however, can be traced to June of 1952, when the 10th Special Forces Group - Airborne was activated.

The U.S. Army Band "Country Roads" pays tribute to the Green Berets with this performance of "Ballad of the Green Berets," originally written and performed by Green Beret Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler.

I’m a retired Green Beret 22 years. Very well done
  • I'm a german, and I'm sad, that such a song could never be sung in Germany for one of our military units. We've lost the pride for our soldiers. It's a shame! This song is wonderful and represents the ghost of an elite-unit. Sorry, if my american isn't correct, but I didn't speak or write English/american for a long time.

My neighbor was a green beret and they played this at his funeral. I cried like a baby that day.

My big brother was a Capt in the Green Beret. He was my hero. He passed but he was a proud Green Beret. God bless them all.
  • Lost my Green Beret Son a year ago. He was Americas Best.

When this song came out during the Vietnam War, I had 2 Army brothers and I Marine brother in Vietnam at the time and all 3 came home safe. From the first time I heard this song, the tear flowed. And still today I can't hear it without tears on the 3rd course. Thank you for sharing. 💖 Just a little Military family I belong to. 5 Brother 4 Army, 1 Marine. 1 served in Korean War, 1 served in Germany during the Vietnam War, while the 3 youngest did in Vietnam. My Husband is an Army Vet. Our son severed in the Army during Iraqi Freedom, and now we have two Grandsons severing 1 an Army Medic, the other a Marine, in engineering. I so PROUD OF ALL OUR AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
  • I had a boyfriend in high school who joined the military in 1973. He was on the rooftop in Vietnam during the massive helicopter lift at the US Embassy. He made it back to the states!! So proud of our military and putting their lives on the line to keep people safe!!!❤❤❤❤

I can never get through this song without choking up. Doesn't matter what branch of the service or even country you're from; the message about duty, honor, courage and sacrifice is awe-inspiring.

This song gave me goosebumps in the 70s and it still does. Thank you.

First time hearing this southern, soft, folk version, I like it!

This is still an awesome song. My stepfather was a Green Beret. I actually heard this song sung by Berry Sadler. God bless all of our spec ops soldiers.
  • I first heard this song in January of 1966 when it was released by Barry Sadler. The song hit number 1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart in late February and stayed there for five weeks, going on to sell more than nine million records. I had high expectations for anyone who would dare to cover this song and the Special Forces did not disappoint. I think Sadler would be proud.

I never served but have always had a deep appreciation for those that have and currently do. 🫡
  • As a combat vet who was stationed at Ft Bragg.... I too loved the original song... this is an outstanding tribute to it. All The Way
