How I Saved Eugene in Choo Choo Charles

Speedrunners have actually taken this a step further! Since this video's release, RoxasTheHeroOfTime found a way to trap Charles on the dock at the start of the game. It also turns out that healing the train can prevent Eugene from dying too! Which would have made my life so much easier lol. So now Eugene can be saved officially all from within the game. It's grueling as heck, but using new found strategies by the community, speedrunners Distortion2 and AstralSpiff have saved Eugene without relying on methods discussed in this video. I actually love how even with no clipping and all these exploits Charles is just so much of a beast that he will not leave you alone even when you try to banish him to the void.

There should be an update where Charles will retreat when getting enough headshots in the beginning. Then Eugene would ride along with us but could die at any point if Charles approaches the train and started attacking.

Man was so determined to save Eugene he unlocked the secret boss fight with Flying Charles

The amount of time and effort to save a fictional person, an NPC, a set of pixels. This is a masterpiece. Eugene will forever live on.

I'd like to think that wasn't a clone of Eugene but a statue Eugene made of himself while waiting on the train. 😆

There should be an achievement for keeping Eugene alive like the achievement in Black Mesa for carrying the hat through the game. You can obtain this by first running off wherein Eugene will spout some dialogue like "You're ditching me?! I can't do this alone!". Then finding the flamethrower guy and getting the flamethrower. Once you do that you go back then do the scene with Eugene but because you have the flamethrower you're able to hold off Charles juuuust long enough to escape. Once you do that then Eugene can make it to a safe refuge but will always come with you on the train. This means you can't take too much damage or Eugene will die. Once you beat the game Eugene will meet his son again and you get the achievement "No Soldier Left Behind" Of course this would be absurdly difficult but highly rewarding.

Fun fact: Eugene could've easily out run choo choo Charles but the devs don't want that.

Tip: You can aim the flamethrower to the ground to create patches of fire that damage Charles when he steps on them and push him back further.

I like how Hopes and Dreams is playing in the background, it's like it's implying saving Eugene is as important as saving the entire world

What's most odd about the game is all the NPCs act like he's alive and you never get the option to tell them otherwise
