This animated Cheetos Baked and Quick Fried commercial features the tagline "Cheese That Goes Crunch." It also features the Cheetos Mouse, who debuted in 1971 and disappeared around 1979, eventually replaced in 1986 by Chester Cheetah. Cheetos (formerly styled as Chee-tos until 1998) is a brand of cheese puff snack made by Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo. Fritos creator Charles Elmer Doolin invented Cheetos in 1948. Crunchy Cheetos remained the brand's sole product for 23 years until the introduction of Cheetos Puffs in 1971.

It’s so fun to see this old commercial! The Chee-tos Mouse is one or my all-time favorite advertising characters. I wanted to share some corrections. The mouse was created in 1967, not 1971. He was designed by artist Paul Coker, Jr. While the original Chee-tos snacks came out in 1948, the baked variety came out in 1968, not 1971. That’s when they started calling the original variety quick-fried. “Quick-fried” was later renamed to “crunchy” and “baked” was renamed to “puffed” and later “puffs”. The mouse was redesigned in 1973 by Bill Peckmann. This commercial is the older design and likely dates to 1969-1971 range.

I learned about this in a trivia question recently and none of my friends believe that Cheetos had a mouse before Chester

The mouse is a MUCH better mascot than the cheetah, OMG!
  • @iansmith5174
They later called the soft crunch Cheetos "Cheese Puffs".
  • @Hi11is
They were Chee-tos until 1998, not Cheetos.
  • Chester Cheetah And The Mouse, The Mouse Was Before Chester Cheetah, Chester Cheetah Is Not Bad At All :)

Weird to see that they had the normal cheese puffs and the turd-shaped ones early on as they do now. Except back then it was probably flavored with actual cheese instead of drums of chemicals that come with SDS' and safety placards on them.

A British mouse is a much better spokesanimal than a cheetah on meth.
