Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox - Week #1

Published 2016-09-09
Exploring Lifeforms with the Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox. This is my first modular and so far I'm having so much fun with it.

Would highly recommend for anyone looking to get into modular synthesizers. Or for individuals interested in a capable desktop synth Very few complaints on my end. It does huge basses and super sparkly highs. Also very metallic sounding which I enjoy. Very space-y. NOTE: I was in a hurry to record some of these videos today and I plugged the Lifeforms into the wrong mixer channel that had bass turned down. I don't know how that will sound on your end but whatever. The point is this thing can do bass perfectly fine. Plus it does have a sub oscillator.

Also, take note of the 1st Arp. clip when I turned up the LFO pulse wide modulation on osc 1 and made 1 osc sound like 2! :D Sooo awesome. I did have a few minor issues though... I couldn't get the up ramp digital LFO to sync perfectly with the beat but I'm gonna blame the Electribe. It's ALWAYS the Electribe's fault. Or it was user error. And the LED on my LFO wasn't lighting up earlier but I put a cable into it and wiggled it and it came back on. LFO still worked though and if there are any more problems I'll send it to PM.

Shout out to Perfect Circuit Audio for being awesome and having great products and cool people!

  • sounds great, I love mine. I was going to get another m32 but decided on the pittsburgh for something a little different. I will (in the future) dbl. up the 32. but this little black box kicks ass.

Great video!  I have a Mother 32 and was looking for something for it to play with and I think this is it.  I like that you are actually making music in this video instead of endlessly twittling knobs like every other video.  Anyone can make cool sounds, but jumping to music is something else entirely.  Good show.

nice sounds. i am thinking of getting the lifeforms sv1. what would you say are the pros and cons of the lifeforms vs getting all the the individual mudules (vco, vcf, vca etc..) from pittsburgh? i dont have any modular yet but i am going to start.
  • hi ya. how did you connected yr. electribe with lifeforms. just via midi out to midi in? coz when I am plugging my yamaha rs 7000 with lifeforms all I get is weird sounds (even after trying out all midi settings possibilities in yamaha, still), beat's doesnt sound nowhere compare your beats coming through lifeforms. maybe I am doing something wrong here. I admit, I gave up after one hr. or so after messing around. I know liforms are working perfectly. I have tested them in friend of mine. it seems like problem's somewhere else. cheers.

Did you experience some tuning issues with your unit?
