Leah's Story - Spinal Cord Stroke - Children's Specialized Hospital

Published 2018-11-26
An outstanding softball player known for her infectious smile and tenacity on the field, nine-year-old Leah was playing with her sister when she began to experience tingling in her fingers. Rushed to the emergency room, she was later diagnosed with a very rare spinal cord stroke. Only 2% of all strokes originate in the spinal cord and they are almost unheard of in young, healthy children.

Just so incredible that she went from being “profoundly quadriplegic” to walking, playing on the playground, and doing it all with a big smile.

Amazing story. Willpower is a wonderful thing. Is one of the main reasons I am walking and not on a wheelchair.
  • The parents are trying so hard not to cry through this. So sad. I hope she fully recovers one day. Prayers to her and the family.

So glad she’s okay. I just saw a video of a girl with a terminal muscular illness saying she would rather die at home than in the hospital, where she had spent most of her life. Afterwards, I saw a video of a girl with end stage brain cancer die in her mom’s arms. So glad to see a story with a happy ending. And this is NOT an ending - this girl is still alive and getting back to normal.
